2000 max hard to start

Maybe someone can help with this I have a 2000 max 104000 miles 5 speed
frankencar cool air intake. In that last week when I go to start the car I can
hear the starter trying to turn the car over but nothing on the second or third try she will turn over. This mainly happens after the car has run for awhile sometimes on a cold startup so before I put myself in the hands of the dealer any clues.

You say that you hear the starter "trying to turn", so I am going to assume
it isn't turning. Shouldn't the battery be the first thing to suspect?

Ok tell us what you have and havent done, you gotta start somewhere... if its the starter go bang on it and see if that makes a difference as it in works better, if it does you got a bad starter. Check the batt and terminals and all that good stuff first though

If you're still using your original battery, it's probably got a dead cell, thus not providing enough volts to start the car.

So far I have replace the battery and the terminals, the starter, installed ngk platinum laser cut plugs and the air temp sensor. This is the funny thing when I put in the new air temp sensor the problem stopped for a 10 days and now it's back again.

Not sure if you are having the same problems but mine was having problems starting hard whether it was hot or cold and it was the fuel pressure dampner. Just a thought.

How did you find out that it was the fuel pressure dampner.

Might be the starter. I was having the same problem, car was taking more time to start up, and eventually it stopped working. The engine turn over was getting slower and slower till it eventually stopped working and just ::clicked:: Turned out to be the starter. Just a thought.

I took it to my dealership. I work at a Nissan dealership so I just brought it in to the techs.

Check to see if you have 12volts going to the start signal fuse only when your key is in the START position.

In other words, the START SIGNAL fuse should only be energized when your key is in the ignition and pushed forward like you are going to start the car.

Sounds to me like you have no Start Signal. The computer doesn't know your car is about to start.

Unfortunately the culprit is usually the ignition switch. Which I hear can be expensive due to the chips in our keys.

I had the same problem in my 98. It was a bad ignition switch.

there is a bulletin in 02-03 maximas about a shift interlock relay or AT and another one that under -13 degrees celsius (cold weather) do not energise and it has a hard start. If it does that while cold email me and i'll help you out.

Before condemning any parts make sure you have enough battery power.
1.) When you turn the key the lights shouldn't dim much.
2.) Check for power @ the starter
3.) Check voltage drop from the starter + to your battery +. Should be .5V or less.
4.) Check your engine ground. Check Voltage Drop from engine ground to bat -. Should be .5V or less.
5.) Post results of Voltage drop tests and power @ starter so that we don't condemn any good parts.

Are you hearing a clicking noise? Maybe the relay or starter?

I think what he's trying to say is the car has a prolonged crank. Instead of the 2 seconds it takes between crank and start in a normal car, he cranks for a while. Stops. cranks again. Stops. and cranks again and it finally starts.

That's almost tell-tale of a start signal problem.

If you cant figure it out take it to my friend Andy. He is the manager of the Shell on hempstead tpke opposite the racetrack. He's very honest and has treated .org members with a great deal of respect and never charged anyone what they didnt need.

Tell him Anand sent you. You should be fine. If you ever need them.

So i'm guessing you have Start Signal?
