Ugly Smell When I Accelerate Quickly..

After Pwning a smaller BMW today, i noticed a strong burning smell coming into my car. I remember smelling this before a few days ago when driving down the freeway. I hear no strange noises. But after a few minutes and when slowing down, the smell goes away.

I am not to sure if anyone has experieced this before. It only happens when I go fast. 50+ MPH

If anyone knows, is this an easy fix? Or do I need to take my car to the stealership?

2LEET4u - I have noticed that same strong odor about seven or eight times in the two and a half years I have had my '04 SL. It is ALWAYS just after I have performed a fairly extreme maneuver; usually a 'floorboarding' job when passing quickly in a very short passing zone.

The first time it happened, I thought I had blown the engine. But I have never actually found any problems that resulted from this almost rotten egg smell. In fact, my car has been mechanically perfect since a few glitches were adjusted right after buying it.

I have gradually gotten to the point that I simply ignore the odor.

too bad we can't smell things online.. that'd make it easy..

how many miles on the car? and are your fluids up to date? tranny fluid in particular?

you sure you're not smoking the tires?

at first i thought it was the tires, but this does not smell like buring rubber. It smells like roten egg. but again, it only last for a few minutes after stopping the car. I wonder if its the brakes???

My car has 29,700 miles on it, so the tranny service is needed. I plan on getting the Full Transmission Service and the Full Cooling System Flush this month. That will cost me close to $200.00....

No mods have been done to my engine, so im not to sure where this smell is coming from???

2Leet4u and Ritz,

It is part of your exhaust! My husband thinks it's addicting because if means you are using some hootspah!

I promise, nothing is wrong, just some unspent fuel or cat juices!

There have been other threads about this and some folks have narrowed down what it is. Maybe search for those? Forgive me, I can't remember which thread it was, nor what the party actually narrowed it down to!

All is well though, like Light, I get it when I accelerate quite quickly also.

Ritz, remember when I was following you for lunch last week? I told you that I can smell you when you punch it? (As well as see you take off like a rocket?), it's that eggy smell!

it is normal and many cars do it, although my car used to do it quite a bit on the highway.....it is your exhaust.

What does "hootspah" mean?

I've heard that this is due to catalytic converters. What if someone got a new cat. paired with a resonator and mufflers? Drrrrrrrr or just a whole new exhaust...?

catalytic

My old Q45 used to do this as well and it is the catalytic converter, which pretty much boils down to exhaust like 4myswee said. Just some rocket fuel not being spent.

"Hootspah": Lots of Cahonies, giddy up or otherwise whoop fanny juice!

I was going to say something about that.. now that it's been brought up (since I didn't think of it before) I had a firebird with a cat that was in need of changing, and it did smell a bit like that..

does this mean our cats are bad then?

I don't want the smell, even if it's for the people behind me.. will aftermarket exhaust fix the problem?

anyone else want Cattman to finish the headers/y-pipe as bad as me? full Cattman exhaust, here I come!

I have the same smell. It first smelled like hot engine oil burning, dripping on a hot exhaust manifold. So I tighten the valve covers and pressure washed the engine. No change. That's when I began to believe what everyone was saying about the catalytic converter smell.

And this smell does not mean the catylic converter has 'run its course' and needs replacing. I first noticed the odor with only 2K on the car, and it has not grown worse in the two plus years since.

The good thing is that the odor disappears within a few moments, and never comes back unless I 'max' my Maxima again.

I consider it to be a 'normal' facet of the 6th gen Maxima.

Had the same thing happen to me a couple of months ago after I had my transmission service done, and I was suspicious also, guess it was the exhaust. But I have my own question, I bought new Xenon headlights for my Max on ebay, cuz my car has the halogen's and I need to know if the harness or the connectors have to be replaced too. I was told by someone at the dealership that an "extra" ground has to be run through the harness, but he didn't know if the Halogen and Xenon had the same one or connector. Please help!!! I would hate to have dropped $700 for 2 lamps that I can't use.
