Grille: Peeling Protective Cover (6th Gen)?

I got my 6th Gen about three months ago brand new with a dozen miles on it. I just got it out of the shop last week because the protective film on the front grill was flaking/peeling off.

Even since then, about half of the 6th Gen's on the road seem to suffer the same fate. I just went to my dealer's website and looked at their stock of used 6th Gen's (9 of them). Three have the same problem. Look for yourself:

Why hasn't there been a recall? I don't mind getting new grille's when in-warranty, but once I hit 36K, I don't want to have to be buying a new grille every six months.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Yes this has happen to just about all of us. especially those of us that live in cold weather areas. Get an aftermarket grill.

Its a common problem with this vehicle. There are plenty of better grills out their for you car anyway - go aftermarket or create your own.

Thanks for the information. I sorta figured out it was a common problem since I see it more often than not.

I have seen a few grills in sigs on here in the past few months. Does anyone have any links to grills they like.

Also, how much of a job are we talking to put on an aftermarket one? Can I do it with hand tools in a few hours?

its the same problem with the top chrome strips on the car. When they fade, you have to pay over 200.00 to get them replaced....

recalls only mean no revenue for the company.... so they make us pay for there non-electrical flaws.... cheap materials are too blame...

My 04SL had the same problem. Nissan would not fix @ 20K miles .. They gave a real Lame excuse ... stones caused it !! .. Well anyway I bought a new grill on EBAY and it was beautiful... However I traded the car before I got it. I hope the new owner has better luck getting it fixed .. This is another issue that Nissan will not stand up to like the Shimmy ... Now I am wondering if my 07 Grill will go this way too. ??

sAME here. I see it all over, there should be a recall for those who don't want to go the aftermarket route.

Yup me too, they told me that if it happens again within a year they will replace it. It just sits in my garage now so I'm sure it's fine....

Same thing happened to me. I live in a cold climate. They will replace it under warranty if the car has been in service for 12 months or less AND the mileage is under 12,000.

Thisa is one of those things that even if they replace it, its going to happen again, and again, and again....so buy aftermarket unless you want to go to the dealer once every 6mo for a new grille

This is old, old, news...thats why the grille for the 07 is completely diff. I had mine replaced 3 times. I have since sold the car, but still see poor max's with that ugly peeling grille. Actually before I sold it..i kept one of the bad grilles, and took a razor blade and peeled the coating off, and below it is the shiny color that actually looks better. I gave the guy that grille as well and we put that one on in my drive, before he drove away. and he kept the new stock one for another day.

hi guys bill here . i read this tread 2 days ago and then today when i took my car to have it washed i did notice the same problem shown on the ictures above .. well my question is if the dealer will replace that badge for a new one ?? i'm leasing the car and never done it before so i really don't know how this works out . i mean will they ask me to replace it with my own money ??? or is it under warranty ? thei leased the car in mid may and it has 8k plus miles . i'm askind this cause when i return the car for another lease i don't wanna get stuck with the bill and if u are wondering what i'll get next it will be a g35 hands down .
well thanx for the answers

Ok... I started this thread six weeks ago when I had my grille replaced, and god dammnit wouldn't you know, I already see a small chip in the new one (which, after a few more months, will result in having to replace it).

Caster, I really like that Sarona grille! Where can I get one like it (in Silver)?

I plan on buying an aftermarket one, and then taking it plus my Max (now with 8K miles on it) to the dealer and telling them it's happening again, but don't bother with the OEM crap, and hand the service guy the aftermarket one and tell them to install it .. and we'll call it even.

Thank god for the new '07 grille. Personally, I don't like the 04-06 grilles. It is one of the reasons I hadn't gotten a Maxima earlier.

That Sarona grille does look awesome though, much classier than those billet grilles I see so commonly on this board. Very nice!

That 'some guy' is Presence on www.6thgenmaxima.org
He's done some pretty tricked out stuff to his car. A lot of 1-of-a-kind stuff.

Yes, a lot of us have had grille peeling issues with our max's. I have had mine replaced about 3 months ago, and guess what? Thats right, it's peeling again.

Will the 07 grille fit an 04? I don't have any chips in mine but expect to have them at some point soon.

I looked a little further and found they carry the Trenz which I really like. I just don't know if I want it plain or with the emblem. It cost more but it is a full replacement which I prefer. Does anyone have any pictures of billet grills on Corral Sand or Spirited Bronze 2004-2006 Maximas?

I think I have decided on the Trenz perimeter grill. Which do you think would look better, with or without the Nissan logo?
