Synthetic gear oil
Quite frankly I couldn't be bothered with synthetic gear oil.
I had my transaxle gear oil replaced with Quaker State 75w90 GL4 at a Mr. Lube in February/05 at a cost of Cdn$34.19. That equates to less than US$30, which is less than the cost of a dino oil change with a crappy Fram filter at the same place.
Don't sweat the small stuff.

If you're going to go to the trouble of buying a synthetic, I would not use Mobil1. It says it should not be used in non-GL-5 trannys. Our tranny calls for GL-4.
I suggest Amsoil 75w-90 GL-4 or Redline MT-90.
Also be sure to use the actual drain bolt, not the black plastic gear position sensor. The sensor tends to crack.

The drain bolt is the one toward the rear of the tranny, facing the center? It's actually a 12mm bolt head. If you use a 1/2in wrench you could round it off and that really sucks.
The big bolt with the 12mm socket cap in the center, just below the battery is the fill plug. It should not drain any oil. When you refill, pour in here with the car level until the oil starts to overflow.
