6speed bell housing

Does any one know how to get the bell housing off of a 6speed tranny. I got all the bolts out and started prying the case away from the housing but it still seems to be hooked some how! Iv got it almost 1" apart all the way around but what could make it not want to come on apart?

You have to spread the mainshaft retaining ring before you can separate the transmission halves.

I presume you are swapping an A33B/A34 clutch housing onto a Spec-V tranny. You do realize that you have to recheck all clearances and re-shim as required.

I looked at going that route, but an A34 tranny was only $100 more with less miles on it.

Ok im taking it to a tranny shop to get them to do it. If I take them a full spec tranny will they have everything they need to do it! Also can they use the shims from the spec becasue I only have the maxima bell housing nothing else

That is something nobody can tell you. They have to measure all the clearances and if they are not within spec, then different shims must be ordered and installed.

Is your maxima clutch housing new? If so, it would have new input shaft and RH drive axle seals. You need to replace the LH axle seal.

Why do I need to replace the LH axel seal?

Well you do not have to, but standard practice on any tranny you get from a wrecker is to replace both axle seals.

The dismantlers generally do not take as much care as they should when removing the axles. An axle seal would be considered a normal wear-and-tear item so that if it leaks, the wrecker will not warranty its replacement.

You can order one and drive it in yourself when the tranny comes back from the shop.

For the few dollars that an axle seal costs, I would consider it cheap insurance.

Yeah, I found some smokin' deals on some parts, that I could not pass up.

It was originally going to be a winter 07 project but it will probably all come together within the month.

Sounds nice. When do you think you will hit the track with your setup? You went the extra mile (6-speed + VTCs) so im very interested in seeing what times you put down, or at least what you trap if traction is a problem.

IIRC

There is a rubber freeze plug on the back side of the input shaft housing. Pop that plug out with a flathead screwdriver and you will see the input shaft bearing and a snap ring which holds it in place. You need to spread out the snap ring with a good set of snap ring plyers right before you lift/separate the trans cover off of the bellhousing.

Also dont remove the snap ring from the cover once the cover is off and don't forget it's there when you reassemble.

Because the axle seals are cheap and easy to do, you should always replace them when you put in new axles. Better safe than sorry.

And if you've never replaced them before it is wise to buy a few of them. The first one can ruined while you 'practice'. Also get yourself a seal puller.
