torn flex section on y pipe

well i looked under my car the other day and noticed that the flex section on my y pipe is ripped a bit, will this affect performance? I notice she now sorta sputters going from a dead stop...

Do you have a stock or aftermarket ypipe?

You SHOULD replace it.

you can buy another, and have a shop cut out the old one and weld in the new one.

ya i know lol but is this bad? I ran over a median and it must've scraped the heck outta the flex...the way you capitalize the word 'should' was meaning that it's bad for the car or just bad for performance?

it wont really affect performance, its after the front o2s so it wont throw off there reading. It would just make your car loud, and maybe a little funky if there is a leak and exhaust gases are escaping thru there.

Actually after driving around with multiple leaks on my cattman Y, I can saw a leaky flex WILL affect performance. Particularly the low end torque. After getting a shop to replace my cattman flex twice, I finally figured out it was the damned short flex that breaks. I custom did a longer flex and had no problems since.

why would it affect performance? if it was a leak on the intake I could understand that, but on the exhaust? especially after the o2s'??

A leak reduces the exhaust gas velocities and hurts the scavanging effects of having high velocity exhaust gases pulling the exhuast behind it. It's why a leak that's at the exhaust manifild flange is the worst power killer. As you get closer to the engine, exhaust leaks hurt performance more. As you get leaks down the line, they hurt the performance less. ie.. leaky muffler

interesting. . .
then I might pick up a little from my leak at the rear beam

Given the location of his leak, would it cause such a performance loss that he can feel some sputtering?

Sorry to hijack this post, but I have a similar suspected problem. After a fair amount of driving, I'll notice that my foot is getting extremely hot when I'm on the gas. While I can fix it with the AC, I'm worried that it might be cooking the ECU. Would a leak in or around the flex cause this? Visually, the flex is fine, and it's a stock y-pipe.

pretty sure thats the heat in your car. Has nothing to do with a y pipe specially a stock pipe...

Sorry to get sorta off topic but to the OP did you notice a weird noise kinda like bees in the can noise that is coming from before the cat b/c it has the precat smell to it. I have a WP Y and cant figure out where it is coming from.

Alright, thanks. While it's nice to know I'm probably not cooking anything, there goes my good reason for an aftermarket Y...

Check the connections around your cat...I dunno if Ben has talked to you but the past two nights I've spent trying to seal the gaps in between...I have a hole in between the test pipe and b pipe. Just my 2c.

Get a new Y-pipe.. pretty cheap and you make a bit more power

Hole in my old Y-Pipe made a turbo spooling sound when you accelerated
