Starter acted funny.....

ok guys... this is really weird...
I tried starting up my car, i heard a loud pop i guess and did not seem normal, so i took out my keys and i heard this loud fan noise....
opened the hood and my starter was spinning very fast i guess, or a loud spinning noise was coming from it, couldn't get it to stop so i unplugged the battery....
Any ideas what this may be?
Thanx...

Peter

When you took the keys out did all the electronics turn off like normal? If you reconnect the battery what happens?

Sounds like your starter got stuck. i would replace it and try it again. They're not overly expensive, and easy to swap

seems like just about everyones starter is acting up these days. Replace it cause it's going to need it sooner or later anyways.

Sounds like a brush or wiring inside your starter got shorted to ground but just to be 100% check your starter ground, it might be corroded or damaged, and might just need cleaning/replacement . The 4th gen starter has an expiration date of about 10 years (this is accelerated by fluctuating weather and temperature changes), at this point they almost always need to be replaced for one reason or another. I had Maximum Tuning do a 5th gen starter for my 4th gen a few years back (it was also the one thing they did that didnt have problems a few months down the road).

alright guys.... i just had this started replaced less than 2 weeks ago along with my 3.5 swap....
now, we all know the starter is new haha.
besides that, what else could it be?
when i put my key back in, it acted normal, and it started up fine.... just didn't know what could have caused it to act that way...

That is your seleniod for your starter getting stuck. My starter did that and I had to replace it. It was kinda freaky cause I thought it was going to blow up...I rushed to get the battery terminal disconnected and it stopped immediatly. Put the battery back on, and it started again.

Before I replaced the starter, I backprobed the starter connecter to make sure it wasnt getting power from the key. It SHOULD NOT have power there with your key out. If it does, then its a different problem

That happened to me also, it was freaked out too cause it just kept spinning, disconnected the battery and the car started up once I reconnected it. I later replaced the starter, but that was a few months later and that problem never occured again after that time.

I replaced my factory starter with a champion re-man unit. It lasted about 8 months and then I had to re-do it. So far, just about 1 year later and it's all good. Even if you get a rebuilt unit, sometimes they are still faulty.
