ok well I was driving home on the palmetto tonight at about 70 just cruising home chilling then all of a sudden I hear a pop look in my rearview and I see sparks behind the car blew like something metalic came off. then a trail of smoke comes out I finally get to the killian pkwy exit for miami dade kendall and the car is making all sorts of noises I get it to the gas station and stop and the crossmember from the middle to the rear is soaked in oil and its just dripping like crazy no oil leaks out of the front so I believe it may be the rear main seal is gone so yeah where is the warranty when you need it.........blah ending to a good night

well i know now its not the rear main seal anymore take a look at the pics and yeah a big WTF!!!! is on my face and i imagine on yours now

its not in the oil pan its on the actual bottom end of the car so yeah

? bottom end of the car? maybe a further away picturue and i could see. maybe your rear end is goin out.

 

i have no idea i was just cruising on the highway not speeding doing about 70-75 overdrive on so i was tehcnically speaking in 4th gear on the auto and then i heard the pop nothing hit my car nada trust me i will know......if something hit my car no pothole nothing just out of the freaking blue at 2:29 in the morning last night

 

what i meant by saying bottom end of the car i mean the bottom block pretty much the part of the motor that connects to the tranny underneath oil pan is clear and perfectly fine

you are lost??????i am really lost that is my same response i had recently changed the oil i only use mobil1 synthetic so yeah it was leaking oil or anything i dunno whats up all i know is that the oil right now is all collected on the undercarriage of the motor looks like it was exploded out of the bottom of the block and its nasty oil it doesnt even look clean

and when i heard the pop last night i saw sparks trail my car not for a long time but for a few seconds like something had flown out

 

Dang bro.... I thought loosing my tranny was bad!!!

 

1) Engine is toast.

2) Time to call up a couple junkyards and look for a replacement engine. What are they going for these days? $750? I've replaced a couple of engines with junkyard engines and found them to be pretty reliable. - all are still driving today, 7 and 8 years later.

3) That would be a good teardown project to understand the failure. Have you been keeping up on oil changes? Do you drive it like you stole it? I'm trying to undestand what kind of failure would make it throw parts like that when you're just driving down the road. I only see that kind of failure in cases of extreme mechanical events such as hydrolock or overrevving by downshifting a manual to a gear that is 2 positions too low. What I mean is that engines that simply reach the end of their useful life and die through age will smoke and make noises - generally they won't expereince a sudden unexpected catastrophic failure like this.

2. last time i did a motor swap was on my 95 max and i put a 2000 motor in which i bougth for 700 bucks with 30k on it...

3...yeah ima tear it down to see what happened cause i had just recently done my oil change mobil1 synthetic and as far as i have had the car oil changes i have been consistent i dunno wtf happened i dunno if the previous owner ragged on it was an old man but time to time his son did use it so yeah........yea i get what you are saying crap just doesnt appear out of nowhere there is always a reason and explanation to how it came to be there.....so yeah....thats all i can think about it its an auto and i was just cruising other than that i have been good lately on the driving not ragging on it unless racing which last time was about a week ago....so yeah

Now, I've somewhat seen something like this happen on a Civic. I'm not saying our cars even come close to be compared to a Civic but, did you happen to going around a bend when this happened? If so, was your oil at the correct fill line? What happened to the Civic was that it was about half a quart low on oil. As my friend was taking a turn the oil pump couldn't pick up anything and ended up going dry. Civic threw a rod, left the same aftermath as those pictures.

 

That makes sense. You should keep the blown motor, tear it apart, and see if you're a rod short.

 

i had recently dont the oil change everting oil ways as finenew filter new mobil1 synthetic..so yeqah i dunno wtf happened....as for what i did to to it nothing just cruising i wanna say that maybe the owners son before since the owner said he did drive it once in a while he might have ragged on it to much and well time was just a key at 162k miles so yeah

I rag on my car with 182K, I've never thrown a rod through the oil pan...

New oil pan and call it a day.

 

Did your oil light come on? If yes, how far did you drive with it on? It looks like a rod failed.

 

Time for a vq35 swap? Sorry for the loss man, I don't think I've ever seen a whole that big through a vq30 block!

that's called "throwing a rod". you must've spun a bearing but didn't notice it, and then kept driving until the rod/journal seized. when that happened a piece of rod snapped off and flew out the side of the engine block. doesn't happen too often on modern engines. I'm surprised you didn't get an oil light when the bearing spun.

 

The block doesn't have a top or bottom. The hole is in oil pan.

 

Subscribing to this thread... I saw another Maxima have this same problem, in roughly the same area. The difference was that he was at idle, and you were @ highway speed. That engine had over 200k miles on it tho.

ok didnt know that was considered the oil pan i am used to cars have a bottom end and what not i figured the oil pan was pretty much where we drained the fluid...but ig uess we learn things everyday so yeah i said f*** it ima do the 3.5 swap might as well now that the car is gonna be down for some time so ima keep posting up what i find ima tear apart the motor starting in a few so i will soon have pictures of the internals and what not might as well have some fun

That sucks man. My crx did that never did find out why I just ended up buying a maxima.

btw I've never seen a max blow a rod on a stock motor??? Thats just unbelievable!

 

For the record, the Maxima has two 'oil pans'. The upper oil pan actually looks like the bottom half of the engine, but it's really just an oil pan. The lower oil pan is the small square pressed steel pan on the front of the engine.

 

That engine in the link above is a 2.5L Japanese version. It is not the VQ30...just thought I would mention.

ouch, that is a serious hole in the oil pan. You can pull the oil pan with the motor still in the car and see what cause the problem. More than likely a new motor would be needed.

 

Wow...I've never seen someone throw a rod in a stock VQ motor. Well not unless they knew it was coming(bad knocking). It's hard to say what it's from exactly. Could have spun a bearing, could have run the oil in it too long creating a sludge blocking some of the oil passages(should have heard some knocking), could have had an injector clog for a while making one cylinder run lean(should have run like crap). There's actually tons of options.

Keep the motor and do a tear down, and post some pics. I'm sure everyone here wants to see what caused it.

dude you can get a used 3.0 for about $200-300 hundred if you called the junk yard in your cities, and a 3.5 for $600-$1000.

 

wow, what in the world could have cost that to happen... makes me fear the same will happen to my car one day... *gasp*
