Trying to buy a steering wheel from a member of the .org and I want to ditch my beat up steering wheel with airbag.... what's gotta be done? Is the removal hard?

fairly easy.. you just need to get some security torx bits to remove the airbag. other than that, nothing out of the ordinary.

yeah its not hard. On top of the security torx bits, please remember to un hook your battery and then unplug the air bag before you start. The air bag is plugged in thru a little trap door on the under side of your steering wheel. Also a steering wheel puller is helpful...I borrowed one from my local advanced auto.

aren't you supposed to unplug the battery then wait 10 min or so before even unplugging the airbag?

on the steering wheel puller. If you don't use one..just be sure not to bang on the steering wheel shaft.

As an automotive technician I would strongly suggest waiting at least ten minutes after the battery is disconnected.

I'm sorry i should have clarified that...I assumed he has at least a haynes manual, and that states you should wait 10 minutes after the air bag is unplugged to do anything. When I did mine I waited over night, and then I wore a motor cycle helmet and gloves incase it still went off...I did not want black eyes and bag burned arms . To each his own.

How about being thrown out the back window? Many automotive technicians have died like that first when air bags came out.

thats pretty funny. i had swaped my steering wheel and it wasnt that hard. but be real careful removing and reinstalling the bolts that hold the airbag in place...i stripped mine and luckly i was able to retap the threads and it was fine after that.

I've been working on cars for a little while and work in an auto shop, but I have yet to mess around with airbags and don't know why you have to wait 10 minutes after the battery is disconnected. Does the system use a capacitor or something?
