car just died, who can guess y?
Sat nite was going to chill wit sum friends and the brake light and battery light comes on. I was thinking to myself please dont let me have to change this alternator 4 the third time in less than 12 months but b4 the light flickered 4 a couple days b4 just staying on this time they just camew on and stayed on. I got to my destiantion and went back home then went back out later on and on the way back to my house the car stutters and stalls on t he damn highway but I am able to roll to the stoplight at the top of the exit ramp luckily. I look on the hood and the alternator belt is gone. I try to play wit the tensioner and it is locked in place.
Has anyone ever experienced this of having the tensioner just stop working? I was wondering if maybe the belt was too loose? I think I might need a high amperage alternator cuz these 4th gens ones r known to worthless especially wit a sound system like I have. I think they have 2 different ones also that have different amp. Anyone know of any sites with good prices on those aternators? I looking 4 sum more suggestions to my problem, thanx in advance

Tensioners are known to go bad. I wouldn't replace the alternator if it is not bad, replace the tensioner and belts.
Also before you plan to upgrade your alternator, I would redo the grounds and add some new ones.

Thanx Kevlo, I going to ask my mechanice if he redid the grounds 4 my engine swap a couple of months ago. I forgot to put in my above posts that earleir that day I smelt that burning alternator smell so I figured that could have went bad as well as the tensioner so I still trying to undecisive as to what the actual cause is
Maybe the alternator seized up and it caused other things to seize? Take the alternator out and see if you can go get it tested at autozone before you put the new tensioner in.
In my case the belt tensioner seized because I had washed the engine bay months before and didnt throughly dry the timing chain side of the motor and the water rusted the tensioner together. When i tried to loosen the tensioner it ended up snapping in two and i had to replace it.
