What does a differential have to do with a 3.5 swap?

Edit: So you're trying to decide between the two? BTW it's "Quaife", not "Qualife". Fixed at no extra charge.

well it's not about comparing them, the money is here now, and which one would be more beneficial to me at the moment.

quaife differentials are limited production, the 3.5 i can get anytime.

but the 3.5 will be nicer to have

Ummm 35 > locking diff

Plus I'd rather have a 6speed HLSD down the road.

Without some power a Quaife is about as useless as a kick in nuts with a frozen mukluk.

differential more than a 3.5 swap because we've done a 97gle auto 3.5 swap and still painful to get running even after getting all sorted like we thought.

If you do some serious mountain driving it's definitely worth having.

But I'd say go 3.5 first. One wheel wonders are underrated.

Quaife, period. If you have to choose between more power and the ability to use it, please don't pick more power.

Plus, as you said, you will always be able to do a 3.5 swap, but you don't know how long the Quaife will be available.

is the 6-speed tranny swap becoming more popular, to the point that it will become as easy a 3.5 swap..

also are the gears in the 6 speed bigger, more durable?

Unless you're into autoXing/hot lapping/or judicious power application out of corners where you're likely to spin the inside tire, I'd definitely get the 3.5 first.

Do the 3.5 swap first, and just get a VLSD 5-speed tranny from the I30.... And call it a day..

Wouldn't the 6sp HLSD basically be a quaife and a 6 speed? Quaifes are helical-type LSDs..

I wonder if a 3.5 will overpower the VLSD?

I was waiting for this to come up.

Yes, both diffs work on the same principle, but the Quaife is better.

In what way?

If you mean to ask whether a Quaife or Nissan HLSD would be significantly better than a VLSD, the answer is definitely yes. Those other diffs will do much more to reduce torque steer and put the power down.

doesnt a elise not have one and they say not to install one?also if you go to the my350z.com site you will also see the fastest stock z has a open diff.

I don't know if you like roasting your inside exiting corners, but it gets a bit old for me. A Quaife will apply more torque to the outside wheel around a corner, helping the car rotate. It's a good idea.

The Elise didn't have an LSD until recently because it would have hurt turn-in response on such a light car and wouldn't have done much good anyway with such a small engine. As of 2006, though, it's offered as an option.

Fair point about those track times, but I somehow think it'd be a different story on a real race track.

Plus, a 3.5 swap can make the car worse in slippery conditions because of the torque. A Quaife has no downsides.
