Polling for opinions on exhaust change
Polling for opinions on exhaust change
I have a pretty nice car now and Im on the verge of needing a new exhaust. After losing some rusty heat shields last week, I notice some other parts that are still hanging around(literally hanging!). So I need some new stuff but I need to know what is quiet. I am using mine as a family car and I need it to be as quiet or darn close to stock or the wife will have my head.
: My studs are in good shape but I think I will need to take down the y-pipe since the flex is almost totally shot and the shield is hanging off it. The muffler was hit against a curb and the tip is all bent and torn and crooked plus its rusting and the cat just flat out STINKS, like horrific smell, worst Ive seen! So do I put a performance y-pipe? Performance is not my goal, quiet is. Therefore my questions are:
1. Is a y-pipe a quiet upgrade and which one is good?
2. Is a high flow cat quiet and which is a good one?
3. Can I stick a stock SE muffler on the 2 performance parts and have it still be quiet?
4. Is there an OE sound level, performance muffler?
Also to consider: price, I dont have an unlimited budget and I think I can get a new manifold back stock system for under $400 brand new. So all you gurus out there, its a challenge, lets see some opinions. Thanks in advance.

I would say get a Warpspeed 2.5" Y-Pipe, it won't increase the sound very much as long as you keep your stock, or semi-stock sounding muffler. But the Y-Pipe is the best bolt on Mod you can get for 3rd gens as far as $$ for HP. (I think around 15HP Gain)
Also, a 2002-2003 Nissan Maxima muffler sounds very nice but is only "loud" under WOT. Here is a tidbit I found about that muffler-
Also, a 2002-2003 Nissan Maxima muffler sounds very nice but is only "loud" under WOT. Here is a tidbit I found about that muffler-
The variable capacity muffler system improves both engine horsepower at middle and high speeds by reducing exhaust pressure and reducing exhaust noise at low speeds. The system uses a special muffler flap valve – which uses high temperature aerospace spring technology and materials – that opens and closes according to exhaust pressure inside the muffler, switching the flow of exhaust gases from one tailpipe to two.
At low exhaust pressure, for example, while idling or coasting, the control valve remains closed. Exhaust is emitted without passing through a secondary bypass, through a single exhaust pipe. As the pressure becomes higher, the control valve (using aerospace industry spring and composite technology) opens, and the exhaust gas flows through a bypass – reducing exhaust resistance and exiting through the car’s dual exhaust pipes. The valve opens at 2,000 rpm and is always open at wide-open throttle.

That sounds like an excellent plan. The 5th gen muffler will be quiet under normal driving conditions.
When I first put on my aftermarket y-pipe with the stock exhaust, the sound difference wasn't noticeable. From what I understand, the stock cat is actually fine as far as flow, unless it is getting clogged.
The warpspeed y-pipe is a definite must have, because it does add noticeable power. I would keep the stock cat, then have a local muffler shop weld in the cat-back with a resonator and a muffler of your choice. I think if you were to talk with the shop manager, they can point you in the right direction.

You don't have many options.
1) You can get a full system from warpspeed, which will be kind of loud, but increase performance for about $600.
2) You can buy a y-pipe and leave the rest of the stock exhaust.
3) You can get a y-pipe and GReddy cat-back, which will cost about $800 total.
4) You can get a y-pipe and have a shop complete the cat-back with components of your choice. The preferred "quiet, but nice flowing" muffler is the 5th gen one, but I am sure there are others out there.
