Well since a few others have brought up their starting problems, which granted, are a little more serious than mine, I still figured I'd throw mine in the mix and see if I could get it resolved.

When I put my key in the ignition, and slowly turn from LOCK to ACC to ON/START and try to crank my engine, nothing happens. Well, all the lights that are supposed to come on, turn on, but the engine doesn't crank or make any noise at all.

But if I pull the key out, start over, but instead this time just do it in one swift motion, it starts up fine...

Any idea what would cause this??

 

ignition switch maybe? ususally 99's have this problem, but u got a 98

 

how much is it to get a new key made for your car and a new switch from the dealershipif you know? i have been curious about it i gota jiggle my **** and its starting to make me feel bad lol

 

Sounds like it's your Ign switch as Andrei said > I use a removeable clip just for my car key, the weight of alot of keys can do a number on the cylinders inside the switch.

 

The tumblers in the mechanical portion of the ignition switch have nothing to do with this problem, it's the contacts on the electrical portion wearing down and getting intermittent or no contact.

The part's about $30 at the dealer, when I checked around a while back it was cheaper and in stock at the dealer, whereas everywhere else it was closer to $45 and had to order.

 

btw i want to ask something related to the OP sorta

is it better to turn the key to ACC and let everything "turn On" and then start the car ? or is it ok to just go ahead and spin the key right away all the way tyll the car starts ?

i heard someone saying that its better to wait just a few seconds on ACC white the fuel system powers on.. any truth to this ?

 

Thanks that makes sense in his case, when my switch went it was cause of the weight of my keys- similar symptoms though.

 

ignition switch, i have a 97 and i had that replaced @ 120K

 

So what exactly is the part I need to replace? Also, is it something that is easy to replace?

 

it's your ignition swtich. SAme thing happened to mine. Replaced the ignition switch and now it works perfect.
