Leather Steering Wheel Repair

Has anyone refurbished their steering wheel? I need to re-finish the top of the wheel where the plastisized finish has worn off. The color is still good, but the texture of the leather is apparent, and is starting to become a little rough. I have found a few color repair kits, but all I need is the plastisized finish or whatever coats the leather.

I figured as much. Oh well, I will hold out a while longer and see if I can't find out what it is coated with.

Get a price first. Brand new steering wheel prices can be literally insane.

IME it can be rewrapped (call your local auto interior restoration shop), but buying a good low mileage one from the classifieds is the best and cheapest answer.

....get a steering wheel/clock spring from a newer max with volume controls etc. that way you get an upgrade.. those wheel skins are nice.. but i just cant get over hte fact aht its not made per wheel (due to so many steering wheel sizes) and it just looks outa place..

If you install it right, I think it looks upgraded, IMO.

You put it over the existing leather. The wheelskin size you order is based on your stock steering wheel.
The thread you sew it on with you can't break it. Pull it tight. The tighter the better. If you take your time and do it right, it takes about an hour.

What is underneath the leather cover on a stock wheel? I was thinking about just removing the leather cover.

For what reason would you remove the leather?

Because it looks bad. If there is something decent underneath then I don't have to put anything else on.

my picture is after about 1.5 years of use btw...

if you get one, make sure you pull the stitching TIGHT with every stitch and take your time with the install, it's about a 1-hr job iirc. you'll be much more pleased if you do the install right.

yea so im lookin on the wheelskins site. i was just gonna go safe and get the black/black but i got the beige leather interior and i was thinking i could maybe match the colors (sand, brown??). seems like a big risk and hassle for something that costs 55 dollars. if i get it in the mail and it doesnt match ill be pissed. has anyone had experience with the brown-ish colors (to match the interior of a 96 GLE) ??? all help appreciated.

Ask for the samples, and look for other sites that sell wheelskins, I got mine for 35ish

I had a combo of both of those colors. It looked good for a all stock GLE. But, if you want a sport look, go with all black (perf. top and bottom or left and right).

That Maxima word across the dash looks very chintzy and cheap looking, it's suppose to be a Nissan, not GM with wording of the model of the car on the glove box compartment.
