My '95 Max died Tuesday night. I went to work in the morning and it started right up but when I was leaving work, the car would'n start. it cranked but did not start. Theres gas in the car, battery is good, fuel pump is good. I think there might be no sparks. My mechanic friend took a look and said it might be the cranks sensor. Any suggestions?

 

Could definatly be the crank sensor mine just went out and it would crank but not start like yours. Before the crank sensor I had a starter and ignition switch put in and neither fixed the problem.

That was pretty expensive I think it was a half hour on the sensor but the cost of the sensor was like 75 dollars. But then again every thing for these cars is expensive.

 

Sure it's not the starter? Has the motor been cranking over slower and slower? Does the motor still turn over? Or do you just hear a click?

 

I had that happen to me once before....it turned out to be the camshaft position sensor...that will prevent the car from starting.

 

i wonder if it has a headache sensor.........

 

Well you can easily test that sensor to make sure it's still working. On the pulley side below all the pulley's is the sensor. Take off the two bolts and connecter and test it with an ohm reader.

 

The starter is fine and cranking is always the same, no slowing down. The car is in the shop now and the mechanic said while he was checkn wire and checkn for sparks, the car started right up afterward without changing anything. He cannot definitely diagnose the problem if the car start right up. Any suggestions?

 

yeah, leave it with him and let him hear it on cold start up, thats if you trust him. mine is the opposite, after it warms up it takes longer to start. somebody said oil pressure sending unit????

 

My 95 se won't start up either! I have a similar problem of the car cranking and not wanting to start. Now the car won't start at all but all radio, gauges, headlights are in working order. I tried jumpstarting the car to no avail...i checked the cables and connectors and they're in good condition. I know it is not the battery because of that (and since I'm also running a red top Optima). Is it the starter? ignition switch?

I am going to take out the starter, then have it tested but what is the exact problem?? Any help would be appreciated.

 

Hey scrubby,

Do you only hear a soft click when you turn the ignition key? If the engine isn't cranking then its definitely the starter, since your battery is OK.

If it is the starter, then the short term fix is hitting the starter with a pipe or other solid object. The tapping motion moves the solenoid slightly and then the engine should crank.

You can always regrease the starter. Its a one-night job and isnt hard at all. And its virtually free. Just so you can check that off the list of possible reasons.

I went to the local Kragen/ Autozone around the way and had my starter tested and the POS would crank and fire up but not hold the charge...so i ended up replacing the starter. Thanks for all the help!

Next on the checklist: change plugs...and im currently looking for some OEM G35 wheels to go on the max...

mine did the same thing i had to replace my o2 sensor and my knock sensor after i tried everything it made me pissed off i changed the fuel pump my battery was good and of couse there was gas and i changed my starter....ughhhh lmfao

So, now I have no clue where to go...could it be a bad connector? They seem fine...Spark Plugs were checked and they're still in good condition.... ???

It can't be your starter if your engine cranks(unless it's turning significantly slower).... It can only possibly be your starter if the engine does not crank.

Your spark plugs may be okay, but the coils could be bad. Your connections could be bad/loose. Did you check your fuses? Have you checked for any codes? use the stickies to find the way to make the dash flash engine codes to you. it's very easy.

 

The check engine light is on..I'm not quite sure about going to check for "codes"

Any help on checking for codes or this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hey you guys,

I pulled the codes and got the camshaft position sensor (fault) code, got that replaced at the local mechanic shop and everything was fine. No start up issues. Now instead of leaving with the car, I left the car overnight and advised the mechanic to start the car first thing in the morning and give me a call. He called and said the car had trouble starting again!!!!

The car would eventually start by pressing on the gas. Now, the starter is new, all connections in good working order, new CPS...red top optima battery... I'm stumped...so I don't know???

 

how long has it been since the fuel filter was replaced? what do the plugs look like? have you or someone check your coils and injectors as well. if it's starting slow or requiring gas, those are good places to start.

I personally checked the plugs myself a week ago and they were fine...the mechanic checked them yesterday and they were wet because the engine was flooded from repeatedly trying to start the car. Should I just go ahead and change them? Because when the mechanic dried and cleaned the plugs yesterday and put them back in, the car had no trouble starting up.

I'm thinking that's where the problem is, old spark plugs that look "okay"...but if not, I will change the fuel filter.

new plugs that are properly gapped go a long way, but it could be the other things as well.

 

So the max starts up fine with pressing down on the gas and will not start up without help of the gas pedal. But when the car is warm, it starts up no problem...what is going on?

 

UPDATE: So I went ahead and replaced my pkugs with NGK Plat's and when pulling out each plug I noticed each plug was wet from I assume flooding the car when trying to the star the Max...But long story short:

New Plugs
Red Top Optima
Connections good
New Starter
New Camshaft Pos. Sensor (got this code after pulling them)

...maybe I need new coil packs?

still continuous cranking but no start...!??!?

 

have you upgraded/installed grounds?

 

All the grounds were checked by the mechanic who replaced the camshaft pos. sensor and were fine. Checked all fuses and they were fine also...I'm thinking the throttle body might have something to do with continuous cranking and no start?? because when the car did start, it would need pressing of the gas pedal to start up...

Please, any help is appreciated.

I took your word and checked my grounding cable for my Maxima 2001 battery after I replaced my starter and "crank but no start". Guess what, I took off the bracket where the end of the negative cable connected to the engine, enlarged the ring terminal so 14mm bolt would go thru, and secured to the starter. Then scraped off the paint where the negative cable was mounted on the chassis. Starter works like a charm. Thanks for emphasizing about this BAD GROUNDING Nissan design. Never come across my mind that it would have this much problem after changing simple starter.Thanks again, and really really appreciated.... PAY ATTENTION TO THIS GROUNDING CABLE .....GOOD JOB GUY....later...
