Passenger side CV axle
Passenger side CV axle
ok, I've followed the motorvate write-up up to the point where you are supposed to be able to pull the axle out. The three bolts on the support bracket are off, and the wheel hub is out of the way, but there is no good place to pry on the cv axle itself to pop it out.
Do you have to take anything else off before the axle will come out? It doesn't seem to want to budge.
The car is an automatic 1996 w/out abs and w/out vlsd.
Thanks for the help.

The axle bearing part tends to sieze up into the bracket, either start yanking on the shaft (not recommended) or give the bracket a few good hits to try and unstick it. Alternatively, you could unbolt the bracket from the motor and do it on the ground, it's easier there.

I wasn't sure if there was something that needed to come off of the axle where it goes into the differential.
I have a 5th generation max (2003) and I'm in the middle of replacing the passenger-side axle. I could not get to the 3 small bolts (13mm I think) that hold the axle to the bearing support bracket so I unbolted the bracket itself thinking I could slide the whole thing out and work on it off the car.
MY PROBLEM: The axle pulled out of the transmission with no problem BUT I cannot get the axle out because the braket can't clear the engine block and the body mount. How do other do this? Help please!
Thanks in advance - Ando.

I too found the separation of the bracket & the bearing a hard nut to crack until...
I sprayed the bracket/bearing joint w/penetrating lube. And after removing the 3 bolts,
tapped the bearing on the knubs that the bolts screw into, in back & forth directions
until it loosened up. then I worked it more & more like that as a pryed with a screwdriver
at the joint between them. To make the job easier the next time, I cleaned & lubed the bracket. tapping was done with a hammer & punch . also I have used some "big azz" channel lock pliers (2 brand names mixed) to do the rocking back & forth. hope this helps...the heck with taking the whole bracket out...more work!
