Dash light comes on when brake is pressed

Whats good guys? This is really strange. I changed my AC, water pump, power steering belts the other day. I bought a set of Goodyear Alligator belts from a local parts store.

They have the a criss cross pattern not like the standard belts that have only the groves. Anyway, I adjusted the tension on the belts so that there is no more than a 1/4 " in. of travel.

Now here's the problem. When I step on the brake all the accessory lights come on. The car be on or off(no key in the ignition). I'm not an electrical expert so I need some help.

One more thing I have a capacitor hook up to my battery, when the car is running it shows 14.19-14.24 volts. Car off it shows 12V.

Any input?

voltage is fine. get the right belts for the job, whether they are tight enough or not. as for the brake pedal thing, unplug the non-blue (forgot the color) harness connector on the brake pedal area. that's the brakelight switch. also, try different combinations of checking the brake lights and your dash lights coming on, even see if your lights work normally when you are not pushing the brake (door, seatbelt, OD, etc etc)

What do you mean by get the right belts? Goodyear Gatorbacks are supposed to be good stuff, better grip and more flexible to eliminate noise. Also lifetime warranty

Have you tried tensioning more or de-tensioning? I dont know why this would happen but I assume something got unplugged. If not I guess it might be a warning alert that your brake switch is bad. Do your brake lights go on when you step on the brake pedal?

well he said that they didn't have the same grooves as the pulleys or something, didn't he? or did he mean they have the grooves as well as crosscuts? if he did, then disregard my previous statement.

Your problem has nothing to do with his problem.

so have you tested pressing the gas pedal yet? also you may want to inspect fuses since it's an electrical problem. maybe you have a bad ground.. if all the lights are coming on. take a vid if you can.

I have Gatorback belts on my car with an underdrive pulley and no problems.

It doesn't sound like that is your problem. It almost sounds like you have some short or other wiring problem.

Me too!

My 92 SE started doing exactly the same thing a few weeks ago. Every time I hit the brake pedal, the dash lights come on. Doesn't matter if the ignition is on or not.

Hasn't been annoying enough or seemed threatening enough to try and trace, but if someone here has a simple solution, I'd like to know as well.

Don't know if it's related or not, but my cruise control seems to have gone on the fritz right about the same time, though it is sporadic. The green light on the dash will flash on and off like a strobe light and the cc will not engage when this happens...

Thanks in advance, and not trying to highjack the thread with the cc issue, just didn't know if it might be related.

Check the rear brake light bulbs for signs of corrosion.
