Installed my Y-pipe, a couple questions.
I installed my y-pipe yesterday, took me about 4 hours of bruises and scrapes. But I managed to get it in. Isn't the easiest thing I have done for sure. But I enjoyed working on the car. Now after installing it, I of course had tha banging everyone talks about. So I removed that black cross-brace thing. I just have a question on the exhaust sound. When I accelerate from a stop or low RPMs I definately have a different exhaust sound. I can't really describe it. I don't know if it is the "bees in the can" sound folks talk about? Is this normal? I will be at Maxus this year so maybe I can listen to someelse to see if they sound close. Hope to see you all, and put a face to the screen name at MAxus.
The exhaust note definitely becomes deeper after adding the y-pipe. Also, I have a slight hissing sound when I accelerate that occurs in a certain range of engine speeds. But, it used to be more noticeable when I first got the pipe. As time went on and I drove it more and more, the pipe seems to have settled in. I think it takes some time for the flex joint to break in a bit. I guess we can compare at Maxus.... see you there

Dammit, I wanna go to Maxus...
I know this post is over 10 years old now but I live in the 703 area (manassas, va to be exact) and for you guys that live in VA as well with performance y-pipes (i.e. Stillen, Warpspeed, Cattman, etc.), how were you able to pass emissions with those pipes installed?? How did you accommodate for the pre-cats and main cat deletions?? Someone please help me because I really want to upgrade my exhaust!!!!

No the difference comes in 2000, 2001, then again in 2002,2003. the 02/03 Y pipe changes NO PRECATS at all.
The 2001 Y pipe deletes the Rear precat (closest to firewall)
The 2000 Y pipe should delete the rear precat same as the 2001, but I can't say for sure, as Nissan did strange Cali/Fed spec changes this year.

well i checked warpspeed - the pipe for 02 and 03 doesnt delete them (don't know if I can use the 02-03 one for the 01). cattman seems to have the CA y-pipe that doesn't eliminate the pre-cats. i need to get in contact with both and see what i can do.
man to be honest VA laws might be the shyttiest in the nation... might wanna reach out to irish or post this in the DC section with Cutler.... but as far as i know as long as you dont have a CEL in MD DC and VA due to the car being OBDII then you can mod how you want... they wont put the cover over ur exhaust to actually check........
Once again the specific manufacture of the Y pipe doesn't matter, it's the YEAR that matters. Any performance Ypipe will have the same effects on Precats regardless of the make (Cattman, Warpspeed, etc.)
as for everyone else who commented...thanks for the help. i definitely appreciated the feedback!!
Calm down, playboy. I wrote nothing that warrants you going postal.
maximaplayboy, there are plenty of functions on this forum to allow you to give vehicle information which facilitates helpful responses. Rochester is correct even if you don't like the blunt manner in which he responds. No one knew it was a 2001 until you posted it after several responses(you and Rochester were probably typing at the same time when you did). So brag on your car a little. Throw the info in your 'garage' or in a cool sig. It will save everyone time.

But you're right about the motor mounts. Good call. The 2.5" exhaust is a tighter fit than OEM. Even more so for the contemporary 3.0". (I imagine you need to be really precise mounting a 3" exhaust on the Max.) Anyway, a banging noise at WOT was what first moved me to replace the torque mount bushings, to stabilize the engine and hopefully resolve the exhaust banging I was hearing.
It worked perfectly. 2-3 years later, and I've not once experienced that banging noise since. And I've the awesome added benefits of solid poly bushings now. Should have done that years earlier.
Rochester, i've seen you on the org and respect your max knowledge but point blank - dont be an *******. im not exhaust saavy on the maxx so this is the place to ask. by the way, how everyone who responded knew i was talking about an 01 max except you? read the posts better before you pop off at the mouth smart ***...

The banging noise reference was by the OP, CMax... and that was 10 years ago.
