Nmexmax, what do you think about removing the butterfly valve?

Just take the entire shelf out. The butterfly mod IMO is useless. This has been debated to death. I dyno'd 2 set-ups, one with the valve working and one with it disconnected9still in though). And i saw a ginormous loss of torque and no difference whatsoever after 4k.

which is not a big surprise, considering that the only difference the butterfly removal only changes what happens during its closed time ie: before 3800, after 2000(?).

I thought you were running the Megan test pipe for a while now. Did you change the setup?

it may have been noted, but I'm not a particular fan of eBay... and if I read between the lines of what you're saying, there isn't a company that sells them anymore?

Well that is fine I guess, a "test pipe" is merely a length of straight pipe with flanges but I don't know of a "legit" company that is selling one for the maxima...there could be one it's just that ebay has thousands of them.

wow $50! I guess the convenience of having the flanges to be able to remove it if necessary are actually worth it.

my 2000 with y-pipe and test pipe
the test pipe gave a nice sound (but no performance gains)

I find it very difficult to believe that with the addition of a more free flowing exhaust set-up (i.e. y-pipe and test pipe) that there are ZERO performance gains

if that in fact is the case, something behind the test pipe is severely limiting exhaust flow

or in the case of N/A motors, too much flow leads to loss of low end torque

I think it has more to do with the stock cat converters that have been around for awhile now that are not the old "pellet style" that really put a big damper on performance. The honey comb style cats flow very well and really you'd be hard pressed to legitimately feel a difference between the two, UNLESS you had an issue with the cat converter to begin with.

as i keep saying...cats these day are more free flowing than in the past so a test pipe doesnt do much.

my experience with a test pipe stems from teh days when I was stationed in Okinawa and owned a GTS-T Skyline (RB20DET), i know that when I pulled that cat, which WAS honeycomb, there was indeed a dramatic effect on seat of the pants performance..

I do realize that the exhaust speed on a turbo motor is faster than N/A, enhancing the effect of opening the exhaust a bit, but I still feel that unless there is a severe restriction behind the cat, the test pipe will show gains at some point

and if the cat is that finely tuned to the motors ability, worst case scenario, you lose a little bottom end torque in exchange for a little top end hp

When i first put in my exhaust i had the ebay test pipe, its was ok

Then i thought the exhaust was to loud so I put a cat in, it was quiet but also alil raspy and it took away the deep tone the headers gave me.

So now I just had a 2.5 inch peice welded in place of the cat .

I love the sound, if you hear dit in person its amazing !

Turbo cars I could definitely believe some increase, I've removed the cat on a few vehicles in my time (all N/A) and honestly other than a sound difference I never felt or saw a performance increase. I actually went from no cat converter and no tailpipe on my last vehicle (4.3L chevy v6 with comp cam, valvetrain, tuning, etc. etc.) to a 3" "high flow" and dual 2.5" tailpipes and I noticed a small increase in low end and no apparent loss in the mid-upper RPM ranges. Now I don't even consider cat converter removal as I no longer enjoy the smell of raw gas coming out of my tailpipe nor have I really seen any benefits from doing so, not to mention not having to mess with an o2 simulator.
