SOMEONE HELP ME!!! Crank Shaft Pulley
I am in the process of replacing my timing belt and everything is going smoothly until I got to the crankshaft pulley. This thing will not budge, I have removed the nut, which was not a problem. Please anyone let me know things that you have done to get this #*@$ thing off. I have air tools, and any other tool. I have been to 10 different parts stores and none of them sell a puller for this. Any help out there???????
I know what you are going through, having changed my
timing belt and other stuff a week ago. What you need
is a big three arm gear puller. I got one from Autozone;
they loan out tools if you pay a deposit and when you
return the tool, they return your deposit...so free use
of the tool you need. I think it was the biggest puller
they had because I had borrowed one prior to starting on
this and had to return it because it was too small.
It took me about 45 minutes to get the damn thing to
hang on well enough for me to tighten the center threaded
post to get the pulley to come off. There was a small
amount of rust on the shaft that made getting the pulley
off a real challenge, but once it was off, I hit it with
some lithium grease and it would go on and come off with-
out needing the puller after that.
I think I ended up hooking the arms behind the middle
belt run because the innermost portion of the pulley is
smaller than the outer two pulley runs.
If you don't have an Autozone where you can borrow one,
you might try buying one at Sears, treating it really
nicely and then returning it when you are through with
it (I see lots of Used/Returned tools at Sears on their
clearance shelf...even bought a few myself).
I just got through doing the 120K service; replaced the
timing belt, accessory belts, tensioner, thermostat,
and water pump. I bought the cam seals, but decided they
were too much of a pain to deal with, so skipped them.
If you need any more info on the procedure, get in touch,
I have the service manual...
