Charging/Lighting question< Attn: Daniel B. Martin

Alright, here is the situation:
My car is a 95 SE auto w/131K on it.

I just had the Alternator replaced, the harness on it replaced and the idler pulley as well.

The scenario is:
when the car is idling at night the lights tend ot change illumination, by that I mean their output fluctuates slightly without any change in the idle. Any ideas????

Please help me!!!!!!

thanks,

Which lights? Headlights? Taillights? Instrument panel lights? All of the above?

From what I can see is the headlights and instrument panel, haven't looked at the taillights yet, but I would assume so.
Hopefully this will help diagnose some things.

Thanks!

Battery cable connections? Alternator?

If the brightness of only one or two bulbs fluctuates, you might suspect the bulb, the socket, or a bad ground on that particular circuit. If most or all bulbs change brightness that is a sign of a charging system problem. Clean and tighten the connections at both ends of both battery cables. If the symptom persists you should suspect the alternator or voltage regulator. The regulator is internal to the alternator so it is all in one package.

You just had the alternator replaced. Did you get a new or a remanufactured unit? Some reman outfits do a first-rate job, while others are "spray and pray" ripoff artists. I've heard some horror stories about reman alternators and starters which lasted less than a week. Some were BOB (Bad, right Out of the Box).

Many auto parts stores offer a no-cost charging system test. This is done with an electronic tester and takes only two minutes. Please have this test performed.
