Been having to crank the engine for a second time after a 4-5 second first try. This has been going on for about a month. The other day it starts but goes dead before I could get the nose out of the garage. Couldn't start it after that. Weird sounding spinning noise coming from the engine compartment when I try to start it. At one time the crankshaft was not turning. When cranking it doesn't even try to start. Plenty of power in the battery.

The starter tested ok. I tightened the belts just to eliminate them. I hear the fuel pump and smell gas, so I'm about to eliminate the the FP. The timing belt was replaced about 30,000 miles ago, but it's a suspect. The fuel injectors were replaced about 25000 miles ago. Is it possible that the timing belt is intact but the timing is so far off it won't start? I also have a broken bolt on the front exhaust, could that be that have something to do with it.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I didn't want to leave anything out, probably did anyway. What're your thoughts

The broken bolt isn't the issue. Since you are certain that you are getting fuel, check for spark first. Make certain distributor rotor is turning when you crank the engine. Check fuel pressure (too high or low could cause a no start).

 

could be the distributor its self. ive had this happen to me before. car just died and wouldnt start

 

fuel pump is a partial suspect because of the long crank times.

Compression test & retest starter, also shine a light in the hole and inspect the starter ring gear as best as possible. To answer the question about the timing being off, no, well actually yes, but it would have been the case right after it was done 30k ago.

ok, here's the latest on this. I have checked firing on coil and spark plugs, all good. Power transistor passed the continuity test. I tried to start it holding the throttle open. It cranks and then lets out a big backfire - through the air filter intake. Hadn't seen that before. It doesn't even try to start, just turns.

I was only suspecting the timing belt because the day before it started knocking slightly or perhaps pinging. The next day, two starts later, it died and wouldn't restart. Just the fast turn.

I was told that if the timing belt was broken, the rotor would not turn. Is that true?

Do what I do. Take it to a good garage find out what it is then fix it myself.

Thanks for your input. It looks like the problem is beyond my capabilities. Could be the distributor, but I don't want to start replacing expensive parts only to find out they were not the problem.

 

There are only a couple of things that cause a backfire out the intake system. It could be a valve stuck open (broken spring, bent valve), but that wouldn't keep it from running unless you managed to damage the valves on all 6 cylinders at the same time, which isn't likely.

The ignition timing could be horribly wrong. If it is firing way too early, that would cause it to not start, and backfire out the intake, but that generally happens when you have removed the distributor for some reason, and get it put back in out of sync.

The final reason I can think of for a backfire out the intake is the timing belt being off by one or more teeth. This seems the most likely culprit to me right now.
