Alternator diode pack(where to purchase?)

I have had one of the diodes go short in my alternator, surprisingly it still seemed to be working ok (14V on the battery under load at about 2k RPM), but it would struggle to maintain charge at idle.
The symptom was a bad whining noise which varied with engine RPM, sounded exactly like a bad/dry bearing, it was very noticeable, even inside the car. I removed the alternator expecting to replace bearings, but found they were ok. I then went searching and found the shorted diode. I replaced the diode pack and fixed the noise. It now also maintains 13.8V at idle with accessories on.
Where did you purchase the diode pack at?

I have that exact same noise(kinda like a scratching noise) but so far no charging issues yet.

^^^^^From searching, I found that the diode packs are mostly purchased at dealers or rebuilders.

I also found this link to rebuild an alternator, but it did not refer to any diode packs, only a voltage regulator.

http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdet...haltrepair.htm

Hope that helps

Edit: Also found this

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

it is made for a gm, but since some gm uses bosch type alternator also, it might fit, just don't know

Also helpful will be this:

Lester number 13477

This place seems to have a lot of rebuild kits, as long as it fits the Lester Number

Found the site that sells diode trio packs (diode packs)

http://transpo-usa.com/catalog.html

This is where I got that link from

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/sh...270&forumid=10

The guy that posted the link rebuilds alternator for a living, so maybe you can ask him on where to get the various components.

Must say I am surprised that a shorted diode on the rectifier (and as a result the stator) managed to last long enough to cause irritation - I would have expected the magic blue smoke to have come out of either like pronto.

Guess the shorted diode caused large spiky currents to flow and inadequate potting varnish on the particular phase's winding may have caused magnetic interaction that set up an audible vibration.

Here in South Africa we can get diode plates for Bosh and Lucas alternators at most car spares shops.

well lawrence,it is definitely an alty issue of sorts,i have verified by removing the belt(noise disappears),also the scraping noise gets louder(more than doubles) when i turn on the headlights..

But like is said prior, their is no charging issues atm..

I live in Australia and I purchased them through an aftermarket auto electrical chain called 'ashdown'. But I don't know where you woudld get them in the US.

oh okay.
i was on autozone.com and seen the price my mouth dropped.

my legend alternator was $100.
but then i read the thread where the ve was "rare" compared to the vg.

i think my alternator was making that noise too.
i adjusted the belt.
and i even tested the voltage load too.

at low idle (gotta adjust it) the alternator was kicking out 14volts with the lights on, defog, a/c on and full blast.

with everything off but fans it was 14.38volts.

at low idle (gotta adjust it) the alternator was kicking out 14volts with the lights on, defog, a/c on and full blast.

with everything off but fans it was 14.38volts.

14.4V seems a bit high. Charging a 12V lead acid battery above 14.2V for an extended time may cause damage.

i have a strange sound happening (sounds like a bearing.. like sonicii's did) so could i unbelt my alternator or electrically disconnect my alternator as a way of testing this?

Remove each accessory belt one at a time, start car, until the noise goes away.

You good on power steering fluid? I thought I had a bad bearing because of a weird noise like that and my pump must have just been low on oil. Filled up my Power steering (Which apparently has a leak) And it went away.

car can be driven 50 feet w/o wpump going? if car is not fully warm? i can wrench the wheel around as far as the ps pump being unattached but is it safe to run without the wpump going for a short time?

Yea, a quick jaunt around the block should be fine.

JAUNT. i like that word. don't see it much.

i'm just doing a short drive up to the neck of the cul-se-sac going maybe 15-20mph in 1st. 1st is the only time road/wind noise is quiet enough to really hear the engine at those RPMs while in gear. I will survey noise in neutral as well.

after i do a run with ac belt and alty belt off if it still makes noise i think i'll undo the alty wiring to rule out the diode/electronics of the alternator/voltage regulator etc. if that doesn't fix it i'll go ahead and take off the ps/wpump belt so the coolant will only be stationary for one run.

unless i start with all of them off, and then add belts back. that may be a better idea.

err... Still sounds like it could be power steering related, I'd check it at least before continuing. Can't you have someone turn the wheel while you listen by the passenger wheel? It's not the classic "errr" noise the power steering pump usually makes, it's more of a buzzing/zzzing that sounds like it could be a bearing. I don't know, might be worth checking...
