Help!!

I can't get my right side halfshaft out on a Gen 3. I've got the steering knuckle off; Chilton then says to pry against the bearing bracket but it's not coming out. Do the three bearing retainer bolts need to come off first or do I pry harder??

I am not sure if this is the same problem I had, but I did have to use an air chisel (very carefully) to get the halfshaft out.

Just make sure you don't apply to much pressure and crack the bracket.

I used the air chisel last night but the separation between the CV joint and the bracket only opened up about 1/8 inch. Before I did any damage I wanted to check if there was anything holding it in, like the three bolts that retain the bearing in the bracket or the snapring. Did you just have to really get on it to get it out?

remove the three bolts, and it should slide right out.. those bolts are a PIA to get to, but you gotta do it.
just get those off, then grab the end of the shaft and give it a goot tug, and the axle will be out.

 

...it doesn't mention that small but critical detail in Chilton. After that changing the boot was not hard - just knocked the outer joint off with a big mallet and wood block.

 

the OUTER joint? uhhhh, that one's not supposed to come apart...

you disassemble the inner joint, then slide the outer boot all the way off the inside end of the shaft...
oh well if you got it done..

 

...but it does slide off the halfshaft with a heavy tap. There's a clip at the end which you must make sure is seated when you tap the joint back onto the halfshaft. It's alot easier than replacing the boot from the tranny end.
