Opinion on replacing '01 factory speakers

It is time to replace my '01 GXE factory speakers. A few years ago I changed out the factory radio (non-Bose, no CD or Cassette) with an Alpine CD receiver (CDE-7820, RMS 16wx4, Max 45wx4), which works quite well.

Now I want to upgrade the 4 door speakers (that's all for my GXE basic package). After some research on the web and maxima.org, I have a few candidates: Alpine SPS-17C2, MB Quart, Polk Audio 650, Diamond Audio, JL audio, etc. Since I have no plan to upgrade the CD receiver or add an amplifier at this time.

So what's your opinion on the replacement speakers? I am not an audiophile but do appreciate high quality sound and I listen to mixed music: Jazz, rock, pop and some dance music.

Thanks!

polk are excellent speakers if you compare their specs to other speakers you can see the quality. mb quartz are also great just have to wiegh out the specs verses price and make a dicision.

Thanks for all your replies.

I just posted the thread on the audio forum too. So far, people have recommended Polk Audio. But I just talked to Crutchfield and they recommended Alpine since I don't have a sub and Alpine gives similar highs but better bass.

im in the same boat...

Yes, ive been looking for the same answers this past weekend and listened to a couple of speakers at the local bestbuy.

Anyways, I have come to the conclusion that you will be running co-axles for the front and the rear. I was thinking off running components in the front (I have a GXE too) but not sure if its worth the price++. I just want better sound.

As for brands, I've research a few, and infinity 6.5" can run on just the amp on the HU. Since its 2 ohms. (Not sure what that means but other forums state since its 2 ohms you can run off HU, no prob.)

But I agree that the alpines do offer better bass, as listed in the review section of crutchfield. Although you will get better performance with an amp.

So if you are not running an amp... i would suggest infinitys or alpine co-ax. NOT components since, most components would definitely sound better with an amp. (kinda required to run components)

anyways, good luck. I'm in the process of picking up infinity components with co-ax in the rear.

-Anthony

PS. if you throw in an amp, you can get more out of your new set of speakers.

I'd go with Infinity Kappas or Kickers. Kappas will have excellent clarity, Kickers are a bit more efficient and will play louder at the same volume setting. Excellent bass too.
