I realize this practice is commonplace in virtually any metallic (and some plastic) stress-bearing part in manufacturing today. But I am not completly convinced of it's use in after-market performance parts.

I just got my new toy (http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=556198), and I am thinking of trying to pay for some of it by helping out some serious orgers who could really use this.

Of course, I would provide Almen Strip testing and saturation curves with every part peened, to make sure that your part is 100% Saturated.


I dont know if this is in the wrong area, but I guess I just want to ascertain the viability of offering this service.

Thanks man, I appreciate you humoring me for a little bit. I am not so much offering services yet (though I am hinting that I might), but trying to ascertain whether or not this would be usefull to people with aftermarket suspensions or parts in general.

I have some pics of gearing that I have peened, but what I don't have is any vibratory finishing equipment (but I do have access to it at work) which would be needed on top of peening. The reason being is that for your gears to work at top efficiency, the Ra (average roughness) must be very low. We could talk though...

 

just saw this response. would be sweet if you could do that. I have a tranny that just showed up and I'm interested in possibly doing this to avert the dreaded tranny failure.

 

sorry.. but what exactly does shot peening do?

 

It work-hardens the surfaces of the metal, making the parts stronger. google and wiki both have lots of information on shot peening.
