starter on the way out?

When I go to start the car sometimes, when I turn the key, it makes that noise like the starter is gone and she doesnt start. Then if i take out the key and turn it back on it starts first crank. Is this a sign my starter is on its way out?

Can you describe the noise? It could be the starter is fine, but you could be hitting a weak/bad point on the flywheel, but need a better idea of what you mean by noise like the starter is gone.

dont think its the starter going bad either, more and likely..yess...it could have sumin to do with the starter.alow someone to start the car while your in the hood and listen to make sure the "noise" you hear is coming from it.if it is indeed from there, do as a fellow orger said...clean it.......have you ever done work on start/changed it.?

i have the same problem except it starts after screeching for like 4 seconds. 99% of the time it starts. it prob is the starter needs to be cleaned.

I had a similar screeching noise at startup but ultimately it started. Turns out the belts running to the (recently replaced) alternator were not tensioned property (too loose). Once they retightened the belts, I've had smooth, quiet starts.

was it hard to tighten the belts? and did you do them yourself?

I paid my shop to tighten them - if you have the right specifications, and tools, I don't think it's that hard. It took them less than 30 minutes, so they charged me $40. I was just swamped with work/moving, so didn't have the mental capacity to look up the specs and borrow the tools, etc.
