Checked out a 99 SE-L Sterling Mist for sale, need inspection advice

Car is 114k miles 99 SE-L.

I checked it out today, everything important seemed smooth except for a few things:

-Driver fog light, broken.
-Hood latch not secure, hoods bounces on freeway.
-Welding near passenger motor mount down to pass. headlight. (the area which holds the coolant tank. Had a line of welding or JB weld.

The welding scared me, everything else was fine. Motor clicked normally, trans shifted smooth. I couldnt see his passenger fendor having any damage or paint-mis-match from previous accident. Says it has a clean title.

I need carfax though if anyone can assist me.

JN1CA21DXXT823652 (6 might be a G)

Also, How much would one of those 150point inspections cost? THat way I could offer him to pay half so i can make sure everything is good. Also, take it to nissan or to a diff. branch or auto diagnostics?

That line you see highlighted looks welded with some grey stuff. I dunno if its some kind of JB weld or something but it doesnt look natural. Car fax came clean. Is it wierd that his Odometer says 114k but his carfax says 116k?

He wants 4,700. but since he hasnt serviced it since Feb 07 how low do you think I can drop it with those flaws I mentioned.

I mean, what possible damage could have happened besides Body on the passenger side fender wall? Axles?

Ill probably have to get under it myself and check the under carriage of the car.

picture above shows a normal seam, nothing to worry about. 4700 for a 99 seems like a good price for a 99 se-l with low miles (if it is in fact low miles and not rollback)

bring it to your mechanic, have him put it on the lift and check it out thoroughly.

full check up usually goes in the price range of 100-200 depending on the shop and what you want checked.

good luck.

the only problem is that Cali has different emission's he would have to get the exhaust and what not redone.

Ill tell him if he gets it done by nissan, and it comes out clean, ill buy it.

No, most cars from the northeast are California spec...

Just because they aren't from CA doesn't mean that they are Federal Spec.

Either way, any 49-state legal car with over 7500 miles can be registered in CA for an additional $300 fee.

Keep looking. There's no shortage of Nissan Maximas anywhere in the US.

I know but its so hard to find Sterlings...let alone SE-L's. I've never seen a SE-L from Glendale to Los Angeles on the streets unless its for sale. And all the one's i found already sold.

It sucks.

ANYWAYS,

Im going to ask him to let me get it Inspected, and he should pay for it. Is Nissan the best place to go?

Good luck. If you want a PPI it's your responsibility as a buyer, not for the seller. But if he pays for it, cheers. Ask him if his wife is available, too.

And yes the Dealer is a good place if you don't have a relationship with a mechanic.

He just emailed me back.

Well my dad would be one owner and me would be 2 because I registered it, as far as the mileage the dealer made a mistake on the title and put 116k and that was not the mileage he got it with, the dealer never resolved that problem and that's why I guess it reads on the title itself 116k.

I replied with:

I'd like to get it checked out first by my mechanic before I buy it, would that be a problem?

Might have been some information that the dealer left out when you bought it, just want to be sure its clean. Buying a used car is a big risk, and since there's no record (on carfax) from Feb 2007 till now, so you never know.

He replied again with 2 emails:

1.
There?s no record bcuase that?s when my dad got it from the dealer and nothing has gone on since then. Can your mechanic come out and check the car?? Because I cancelled the insurance and I really don?t want to drive it like that.
He lives kinda far, i'd kinda understand that.

2.
Also If you check the carfax report you will see the error on the last transfer the mileage goes from 111,491 on 02/10/2007 to 116,294 on 02/27/2007 that?s only 17 days apart and it had been sitting at the dealer for those days.

What you guys think

Perhaps dealerships, but I know by sending current to a wire with the cluster out of your car you can give the speedo/odometer a reading that y ou are going 150mph and after a few weeks of that roll it FORWARD till it starts off at 000000 again and go from there.
