air con problem
air con problem
I have a 96 with the climate control. Here, the temp often gets to 40C in the summer or even more, so a bad aircon is horrible horrible horrible...
What's happening is that I start the car, with the aircon set to auto, usually 72F. I drive off and after a couple of minutes it is blowing nice and cold. But then, after about 5 minutes, it 'fades' - doesnt stop working completely but it is nowhere near good enough. Then, if I am on a longer journey, after about 20 minutes it usually starts working great again and will keep working great until the end of the journey. Switching to manual fan speed makes no difference. The rad fans do come on when I switch the AC on.
I have had the pressure of the refrigerant checked and it is full. No leaks. Also had the evap valve assembly changed. I also changed the climate control unit inside the car in case it was that. Can't think of what to do next?

It could be the expansion valve in the evaporator getting stuck.
It can the cause the evaporator to freeze up (air volume being pumped out of the vents will reduce) or it can cause the evaporator to heat up which means you wont be getting cold air.
If this is the case it will have to be replaced.

Do you have access to some gauges?? if so the next step would be doing some trouble shooting.
Don't have the right type of gauges unfortunately. Think I'll have to try a different air con guy. It's got to the point where I'm thinking of changing the car! Maybe it is the evap valve again like the previous message suggested. Or maybe the pressure switch is sticking, have to check that, if it is then the compressor will be cycling. So if the compressor is not cycling it should be the evap valve I guess.
