I just put the new tranny into my car. I installed fresh axle seals etc. However after I got everything together, the passenger axle leaks...and it's not drops either, it's a small stream. At first I thought it was the dust shield installed backwards. I removed and reinstalled the axle with the dusk shield in the appropriate direction. It still leaks. It clearly is coming from the seal where the axle meets the seal. It even seems that the axle might not be in all the way, but I can't move it further as the carrier bearing is tighten as far as it'll go. My thoughts it to replace the seal...but with the tranny in the car. Thoughts on how to do it?

Also to be clear, when I purchase seals, I asked specifically for I30 VLSD seals from the dealer...but the could of gave me the wrong seal.

It's been about 6 weeks since I driven my car. I want to drive it again.

i have the same problem when they rebuilt my 5speed trans i think these axle seals are crap made cheap. good luck

 

The passenger side seal has a slightly smaller opening than a driver's side open diff seal. If the dealer got those switched that would explain it.

2 things... A: They could have given you the wrong seal. Either way, things are not sealing properly, so you need a new seal. Get the new seal, then check it with your axle shaft to make sure you got the proper size.
B: The seal in the car currently could have been damaged while you were installing the axle shaft, or while you were installing the seal. They are pretty fragile, it doesn't take much to damage them.

At this point, it would probably be easiest just to drop the tranny and replace the seal. The passenger side seal is in a bad spot. You can try it with the tranny out of the car, but the seals are hard enough to line up and get in straight with it out of the car, so...

 

Agreed on all points! However, you could possibly do the seal with the trans still in the car. 2 ways .... first is more work, but easier access to the seal. Drop the X member (have to support the engine IIRC (but the trns mount will likely hold it ok with the front and rear mounts dropped, but to be safe, just support it). Gives you an ample amount of room to do the job. Second is ... drop the shift support bracket (have fun!) and you can get up in there "ok" ... not as much room, but a hella lot less work for sure. Or, take the 2.5 or 3 hours and drop the trans. So I guess there are 3 options overall. G'luck ... keep us posted.

 

The shift support bracket is already off. I still need to do engine mounts, so I'll attempt to drop the crossbeam and try it.

thats what i did, I think i went through 3 seals before i finally got one right. In the end I got it started by hand and then with a long wooden dowel had a friend tap the seal in very slowly as i worked the dowel around the seal to make sure it was perfectly strait.

taking the crossmember off is easy. undo the 4 crossmember bolts. than with a couple long extentions get the rear mount through the driver side wheel well with a 17 impact. front mount is a little easier. than your done!
