My name is Tom, I am thinking of buying a 86 maxima, It has a few "Minor"(?) problems so here is a list:

1) "Sensor" light is on and stumbles off idle (MAF sensor?)

2) sunroof opens great (power) but only closes from time to time

3) broken tail light

4) there are exhaust leaks

5) leaking front valve cover gasket

6) power steering donen't work at all

7) needs a windshield

8) the pass. side front door opens from the inside but not the outside
.
So how hard is this stuf to fix? how much shoud it cost? is ths car worth buying? thanks tom

 

I dont know about the entire ps system, but just having a gasket (maybe a berring? <shrug> it leaked through it.. had to get it fixed) cost me ~$100 w/ my mechanic who gives me a discount... might not be entirely correct (I never actually saw the bill, I was in high school, my dad picked it up while I was in school) no idea what its like to replace yourself. New OEM exhaust from the cat-back is ~$130 - Exhaust + dual tip stock muffler w/ mounts. brake lights run anywhere between like $40(?) and $100(?) depending on if you buy a set or individual... I think.. there's a thread on this board somewhere for those kinds of parts... think its titled "Look what I found" or something... don't know about the rest of it, never had to get any of that fixed. if I find it, I'll put post to it and put it at the top for you.

uhhhh it would seem they cleaned the forums... so the thread about 2nd gen trim parts (grille, lights, bumpers etc) is gone.. sorry man

Thanks for the info, as for the rest I work in a junk yard where we have another 2nd gen maxima (86 5-speed.). I hope I cand get what I need of that as far as the PS system, pass door and I think the sunroof switch. and I think I can just pull off that valave cover and RTV it on there and the tail light.

Where can I get that stock cat back system who manes it? Nissan? Thanks

 

you can get it from a nissan dealer (dont know if it'll still be my priced $130). The store I priced it from is called Bap-Geon, its an import parts store in my town, dont know if they're nationwide or not.
