Michelins

Sorry guys, have not had time to start a post and give you all the good news. I have had my Michelin XGTZ4 22550ZR17 tires on for abourt 800miles. I would have to say, beside the Stillen Y-Pipe, there is no better mod for our cars for the $$$. They are not cheap, but if you are reading this post, you probably spent over $22k for your car. So what is another $1k for better handling. If you need tires, can afford to drop $900-1,000 on a set. Definitely do it. The car sticks to the ground phenomenally.

I completely agree with Rubman. The Michelin Pilot Sport XGTZ4's are amazing. I would recommend them to anyone. But they are kind of expensive.

how are the HX MXMs - they are a little more than the RE92 but less than the XGTs.

Where did you get these? I am seeing Pilot Sport A/S at 225/50/17 but the Pilot XGT/Z4 only available at 225/55/17. Where did you find the XGT/Z4's at 225/50/17?

Special order @ NTW in Richardson, Texas. Exact same size as Potenza's. I believe that is the only size recommended for our OEM 17 x 7 wheels.

I think the 225/50/17s are listed at tirerack.com, unless maybe I looked at the wrong size

I think its 300 and no, tirerack had the 225/55/17 not the 225/50/17 which we'd need. I think it might require special order.

The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S are listed at 225/50/17 but that is a different tire than the Michelin XGTZ4's.

I'm with ya' man. I appreciate the information. I expect that I'm going to have to do this this week since the excessive rain this week has proven once and for all that I must get off of the Potenza's.

PM me as soon as you get them. Besides the Y-pipe, That you guys convinced me to buy(ha-ha ya'll twisted my arm). I am entirely convinced that the XGT Z4's are the absolute best mod for the car. I now absolutely love to drive my car.

XGT Z4

Does anyone know if Michelin has discontinued the XGT Z4 in the 225/50/17 size? I notice that Tire Rack doesn't list them on their website anymore.

Please keep the posts coming about your experience with the Pilot Sport A/S. It looks like a great tire, but I'm curious about the wear and handling - it better be great for $200+/tire!

Let me try to clarify...

I have another email out to Michelin product support to get even more details, but here is the preliminary.

The Michelin XGTZ4 is part of a "Ultra High Performance All Season" category which contains the Pilot Sport A/S also. The information that I'm getting is that the Pilot Sport A/S is the newest tire in this category and the XGTZ4 and V4 are the older models if you will. Similar ratings, but new tread patterns and rubber compounds on the Sport A/S. Slightly higher ratings on comfort and tread life and wet traction with equal ratings on dry traction and all-season traction.

Now, on the other hand, there is the Pilot Sport (NO A/S). This is the first tire to enter Michelin's "Maximum Performance" category. It carries low comfort, tread life, and all-season performance ratings, but it seems to have the #1 wet traction and dry traction ratings. Unfortunately, it is not made in 225/50/17 size. This would be compared to the Bridgetone Pole Position line. I will let you know what Michelin says back to my last email on this.

So, the net-net is that I ordered the Pilot Sport A/S, which is part of the new "flagship" line for Michelin and would seem to add to the great all-season performance that the XGT line carried. As far as $210/tire. That's pretty good as they MSRP at $289/tire.

The MXM4, fyi, is a high performance all-season touring tire. Better comfort ratings than the Sport, Sport A/S, and XGTZ4 but not as high ratings on wet and dry traction.

I have a few more questions out to Michelin and will come back and let you all know if they provide any more information.

Oh, and don't bother with their web site. It still hasn't even been updated recently enough to include the Sport A/S.

Heard back from Michelin...

Let me first say that Michelin customer support is great. Maybe they don't get that many emails like mine, but they returned my call first this this morning. I emailed them on Saturday. Go Michelin Customer Support!

So, I have confirmed that the Pilot Sport A/S is replacing the XGTZ4 for Michelin as their top performing all-season tire. You should expect to see fewer and fewer stores carrying the XGTZ4 as the supply runs out. Both are excellent tires I am sure, but the Pilot Sport A/S is the new one.

I will be out of town when my Sport A/S tires arrive, so I will be getting them mounted and balanced on the 29th or 30th, when I get back in town. I'll post and let everybody know how they are.

Michelins

Thanks for going through all of that trouble to find out about the the reaplacement on the XGTZ4's. Let us all know after about a couple hundred miles of riding on the tires. I've logged about 800 miles so far and am loving mine. No matter how much you like your car, they absolutely make driving a Max pure heaven. Hope I can continie to say that even after I install my Eibach pro-kit. Happy motoring.

Bump...

I have just gotten my Pilot Sport A/S 225/50/ZR17's installed. Rubman, I second your motion about these tires. I have not taken them up to high speeds yet, just got them popped on over lunch and have a lot of catch up work to do since I just got back in the country. I can say that I felt the difference driving off the lot. Softer right, quieter, and much better traction. We are in the middle of lots of rain here in Seattle, and I pushed my RE92's to spin just before going to the garage to put on the Pilot's so I'd feel the difference. I can't even begin to explain the significant different in the feel of the vehicle. I will follow-up with more description after I have run some errands this evening.

I will also take some pictures of the tread before too long...waiting for the rain to stop to get a few shots.

might have to trade

anyone want a set of RE92 with only 600km on them?
I might have to get some better rubber on mine. Right now it is snowy so I have blizzaks on.

Tirerack has a survey section with consumer's ratings of tires. I didn't check the ultra-high performance section. In high performance the RE92 didn't rank too well.

PS. I get beat by everyone at the light cuz I am taking it easy and come spring time I will unleash the power. Realistically the fact that mini-vans, Cavalier, Civics beat me off the line in snowy weather means nothing. All it means it that they are dumb enough to punch it, and their low-performance tires has better traction than my
235 45 17 Blizzak LM22

You like my reasoning?

Good deal. Though, I'd tend to say pay a few more dollars and get the Pilot Sport. Pilot Sport are the new Maximum Performance category and are proposed to be the best performance tire Michelin has ever made..plus their tread-life warrenty goes to 30K instead of the SX line 20K. These are both summer tires, however, and are unlikely to improve the wet traction that the RE92's are giving us.
