need help with awful squeal when turning

recently my 96 GXE has been squealing a little bit at startup and sometimes when driving. I need to change the belts and possibly the tensioner and have ordered the parts. I noticed the last couple of days that turning the wheel all the way to either side causes the squeal also, even when stopped and regardless of engine rpm. What does this point to? Is my PS pump or rack the real culprit? Has anyone ever identified the same problem and fixed it successfully?

Thx

as for the squeal at start up. My 99 used to do that when i first bought it. Turned out to be a bad starter, although I don;t think that should effect your steering.

Could be the pump seizing up and the belt slipping, how'd your fluid level? I've seen that before due to low (well actually none) fluid level. Or of course it could just be an extremely worn belt there.

my PS pump squeels when the fluid gets too low and I turn the wheels (leaky hose. ARG!), it sounds like a moaning dieing animal.

When exactly does the sound happen? while turning? when firing up? backing out?

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to check the PS reservoir after work today and see whether that's a contributing factor. I'll follow up with more info then.
