How do I tell if I'm cali-spec or not?

Search came up with conflicting answers:

http://forums.maxima.org/search.php?...g&pagenumber=1

Some think it's 110A, while others think the GLE has a 120A to 125A output.....

I would just get the higher rated one.

Jim,

A check with carparts.com's database seems to confirm:

A)95 to 96 models are 110A and 125A for Cali and non-Cali spec cars, respectively.

B)97 to 99 models seem to depend on the model, with 100, 110 and 125A output alternators depending on trim designation......

C)Do yourself a favor and just get the 125A spec one.

Bill, getting a higher rated alternator than that which came with the car couldn't cause any problems??? I'm assuming fitment is the same...

using a higher amperage alternator means that you have more electrical power to run amps, and other electrical components.

No, it shouldn't. This is Nissan we're talking about, so I'm sure it fits in the same space and bolts on without problems.

Hmmmm, this makes me wonder if the alternator power went down over the years. Where did you get those numbers from? In my 1997 Factory Service Manual, on page EL-40 the alternator specs show 2 different alternators. Part LR1100-711 and LR1110-709. The former is the "standard" and the latter is the "option". The specs are all the same except the output. Standard for "nominal rating V-A (volts-amps) is 12-100 and 12-110 respectively. It does not tell me why there are differences in the alternators, but the only clue i found was on page EL-36, in the system description that says ...power is supplied at all times to alterntor terminal 'S' through: 120 A [For California] or 140A [Except for california]fusible link.....". Thus, it makes me believe that

Also, I remember some time last year I asked the parts dept of the local dealers about the same issue. they told me the part numbers for the GXE, SE, GLEs were the same, thus nullifying the myth that "cars with heated seats have bigger alternators". The higher output appears to be california/non california emissions based.
