Catalytic converter is rattling like crazy

I was at the shop today and was told my rear cat is shot. I tried calling several places to see if a universal cat will fit but did not have any luck.
the guy at the shop stated I need to get one that is Bank2. if a universal is not a solution have any of you' all replaced your rear cat and if so how much did you spent on the part?
I found an Eastern Catalytic Converter for $259.00 and a Catco for $269.00 is that a good price?
I have an 02 max 6-spd

thanks in advance.......

The rear (main cat) or one of the ones that comes off the exhaust manifolds?

i was able to find both pre-cat and main cat in aftermarket. not as good as the OEM though but much cheaper.

Let me see if I can describe it a tad more thoroughly. (Starting from the front bottom of the car going towards the back) First cat is the one that looks like a small bucket. This is the front cat. The one I need is the next one that follows the front cat. It looks like it is connected to same pipe as the first however it has another little pipe that is connected somewhere on the engine.. The third cat is the one closer to the muffler. I tried to get the exact part name and the guy stated it is a rear cat bank2..
Sorry to sound follish by no knowing the proper term for the part I need.

thanks.....

that doesnt make sense... The bank2 cat is the "bucket" one between the manifold and the downpipe at the very front of your car.. He must mean your downstream pre cat which actually connects to both manifold bank 1 and 2. Do a search for precat and look for one that looks like a mini main cat.. Thats what you need apparently

thats the "rear" precat...it gets eliminated if you were to add a y pipe...the one directly to the left in the photo, is the FRONT precat and can be seen if you look directly in front of the radiator fans

So what do you all think my options are? Replace it with an after market cat, or go with a y-pipe? If I select the y-pipe what happens to the 02 sensor?
Any benefits of going with the y-pipe?
If any of you replaced this same cat and can comment on price/vendor I would appreciate it a whole lot.

Okay, so I called Warpspeed and they stated this diagram does not look to be for my 02 max...I got this diagram from Nissan plus I also found one online that matches. New symptom, rotten egg smell started on Saturday..
Any suggestions as to what else I can do?

Hey 02_Maxima_6sd,

Did you get your cat for your 2002 maxima from warpspeed? Did you install it and if so - how difficult was it i.e. was it rusted on there or not too bad?

I'm just curious since i too have a rattle and 2 mechanics have said it was the cat (I thought it was the Timing chain tensioner though).

For $100 - I may try out the warpspeed cat if that is what you went with. thanks!

Hey Hopper and welcome to the forum!

What I needed was not the main cat which runs for about $100.
The converter I ordered is called a precat "bank1" which is the cat that is by the firewall. There is another precat known as bank2 which is right in the front where your radiator is located.
Who diagnosed your issue? It is imperative that you get a few free estimates to make sure you are told which cat you need. You can call "Dallas" from warpspeed and he can order one for you. the part I ordered is the Catco brand #1079 (bank1 precat) and I paid $259.00. Dallas was very helpful and knowledgeable that is why I gave him my business.
Joe's Muffler shop in Addison, TX. did the install for me. He had a difficult time removing the precat so he charged $200.00 for the job. I still saved well over $500.00.

hope that helps.....

Thanks 02_Maxima_6sd,

I am still trying to get a few different opinions as Im now also reading all about the different cats on this car.

My opinion is that my "rattle" is the TC tensioner, but a mechanic said he was under the car when another tech revved the engine and heard it in the cat. Now I just need to ask him WHICH cat did he hear it in

Good info in this thread though, thanks again!

Open the exhaust or remove the cat, the metallic laminated stainless steel gasket is reuseable. Remove the cat and inspect it! Or buy my used cat for $150 or just call WarpSpeed...If it is your cat you may wanna investigate why it failed...possible too rich condition?

Do you trust the shop that diagnosed the cat as shot? Why do they think it's shot? Is it throwing codes? What is exactly rattling?

My max did no throw out a code. It just rattled and that bugged me because Maxima's are suppose to look great, drive smooth, and sound nice.... 2 out of 3 was not satisfactory to me..
