DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to the track friday night I ran 2 passes. My third pass went like this:
I burned out in the water box , pulled up to the staging lanes, I gunned it with the nitrous switch on and BOOM!!!!!! A NITROUS BACKFIRE Smoke was coming from under the hood and then everybody was saying fire. They put the fire out I looked under the hood the CAI(Clamp and rubber connector) blew off from the throttle body, the Air Filter had a hole blown thru it and the plastic panel under the filter was gone. I checked for leaks and I did not see any so I cranked the car and to my surprise it started with a rough idle the MAF got smoked out. I fixed everything enough to drive home about a hour from the track and made it home fine. Basically I reconnected the clamp and rubber hose to the throttle body pulled the air filter completely off and check CAI to make sure the were no metal shaving left from the backfire! Check the PICS:

Yeah, that bites... I had that happen on the strip - also melted a piston and trashed my last 3.0 at the same time. You were lucky....

Sorry to hear that. Was it a backfire that caused it?

Yup, while spraying 150-shot in 2nd gear, there was a chain of three deep explosions and then a dead cylinder. The engine kept running on 5 - enough to get back on the trailer.

The stainless screen on the 4th gen MAF wound up crumpled into a ball - I found it inside what was left of the air filter, which looked a lot like yours. The dead cylinder had a piston with a chunk missing in the top, and the side of the piston looked like someone did surgery with a plasma torch - even melted the piston rings away, from the top down through the side.

I keep it on my desk at work - it's a great conversation starter.

But, it did get me moving on my 3.5 upgrade, so I'm glad - I guess...
