Burning smell

I got in my car today, and the inside of the car smelled like something was burning, and it was somewhat coming out of the heat vents. I checked the engine and it smelled ok, but twords the left side, by the belts, i could smell it. It doesn't smell like oil is burning, and there's no funny colored smoke coming out of the exhaust. I checked the oil and it seems fine. All the other fluids look alright.

It was fine last night, and then it just smelled bad this morning. I know this is a really vague description but does anyone have any ideas?

Keep your eye on the alternator. They are known to burn up on earlier 4th gens.

My first guess would have been dust in the vents seeing as you are from Michigan and it is very cold but... what njmaxseltd is saying makes sense too.

The alternator it is. I was driving down the road and the radio went out, dash lights flickering, speedometer flipped out and it shut down. I wish I had known, I thought it might have just been a plastic bag stuck on the exhaust or something.

Ah well.
