Clicking/ Scraping Noise When Turning Right
Clicking/ Scraping Noise When Turning Right
OK, on my 00 Maxima when I turn right i keep hearing this Clicking / scraping noise.
If I am on the Highway, and turn my wheel just the slightest bit it starts making that noise. I have been told by some mechanics at my work that it is a CV joint but from others I have heard it has been a bearing.
I want to inform you I work at a Toyota dealership in Acton Ma, and don't know if I should trust them or not.
I also have another problem that sounds like a blown bearing somewhere. When I am slowly taking off it sounds like there is a sound of a almost scraping but fast clicking then goes away after about 3-4 thousand RPM' s I don't think its that big of a problem but any suggestions on what it could be would be great.

Same here... sorta
For a while I was having the scraping/metal on metal as well as a kinda loud *POP* when I'd turn all the way left and hit the incline of my driveway.
I haven't heard it lately but would like to figure out what it was because I don't think things like this just go away on their own.

here are some pictures that could help you with your problem.
this is were the axle is at.

this is how your axle is suppose to look like when its good

and this is when your axle goes bad.
you might not have a big rip like mine but if you see any rip or grease around your axle, then your axle is bad.

If you hear clicking it is too late to just change the boot. You need a cv joint but it is easier to just change the axle.Autozone lifetime warrentee left side about $100.00 right side more about $140.00 but if the boot goes again the warrentee will cover it.
Well when i drove it today it felt like it was more of a scraping on and off everytime i turn right but I'm not sure if that's considered "Clicking". Tomorrow i will take pictures of my CV joint Boot and post them on here to see what you guys think. And maybe a video
i am having this same problem on my 2001 max and it is weird cause it started today. My car only makes this noise when turning right, it is like a moan type sound, comming from the driver side somewhere.
Mine really does not have any clicking, just a moan/grinding sound....i checked my axles and looks at the boots on both side and everything looks to be 100% intact.

My car scrapes like that too, sounds as if something is scratching against each spoke of the rims, speeds up as I drive faster. I know one of my boots is torn, but I didn't think that would make the sound
I figured it would just be an annoyance that I hate dealing with, but I'll replace the axle this weekend

Also, looking at advance auto parts, they sell the axle shaft assembly. Is that the same as the half shaft sold at autozone? Also, does the axle come with the boot or must I buy it separately?

I don't know if this problem might apply to other years. The dealership guy mentioned only 01's.

I had the grinding "metal on metal" (no cracking like a bearning or cv axle) noise from the right front tire only when turning left. No noise while steering right or straight. I jacked up the right front wheel, (I recommend using jack stands for safety), took the tire off, and noticed the brake "dust/splash" gaurd was within millimeters of touching the brake rotor. The location was on the bottom inside of the rotor. I wedged a screwdrive (actually it was the screwdriver end of the cars jack handle) between the gaurd and rotor and gently pride the gaurd away from the rotor. I can only guess the gaurd possibly was bent in during automatic carwash events. Hope this helps.

This maxima has never had the wheel nut loosened for any reason or service so it was weird that it backed out alittle. That pin held it from backing off to much. The nut backed off maybe 3-4mm and that what was causing my scraping, groaning, clunking noise.
bingo. manualmaxima hit the nail on the head. mine had the same problem when turning right, it annoyed the crap out of me. bought wheel bearings and was about to change them when i discovered the axel nut loose. solved everything
Stop being cheap and get an HU. Its a WORLD of difference unless you get something like a JL cleansweep of RF 360.2, I think audison makes one as well. Even then with those you;re still out of alot of money so just get a simple HU
same issue 03 six speed
I am having the same issue when my 03 six speed turns right. I notice that the car has to be in gear. (doesn't really happen when i coast) Sometimes it's bad, others it is not. I have taken both wheels off, turned the steering wheel, checked the axle nut, spun the wheels, felt the axle and joints while spinning back and forth, checked the brakes and guards, and even recently took it to a pretty good shop and they couldn't find anything. My worst fear is that it may be the tranny
and one other thing that may be affecting it is that the power steering has been leaking for a while and I havent had the time or money to take care of it. The car has 112,000 miles on it and has been perfect since I purchased it with 80,000, but it seems like when I hit 110 s&*t has just been falling off. The shop I took it to said to just keep driving it till it got worse and bring it back in, but I don't know if that's such a great idea. Also I have to drive halfway across the state soon and don't think it may be good for it.

Bringing thread back to life.. So, if I hear *mild* clicking, nothing too loud, and I know for a fact my boot is torn and leaked out, I HAVE to replace the whole axle assembly? I'm not being cheap or anything I just need to know before I go out and buy either the boot or the axle entirely. Only my right side is torn, my left side seems to be intact and it clicks when pulling into a parking spot but very low, not loud at all. I am leaning between replacing both left and right boots, or just replacing my right axle. I spotted that the boot was turn when I was doing my brake pads. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
just order both left and right dss axles from this guy, he will combine shipping to be like $25 iirc. do it right the first time, dont put a new boot on a clicking cv

Replacing parts because you assume it is defective can be expensive. Sometimes the boot may not appear damaged because it is pressed together. You may want to re-examine the boot and see if you can pull them apart. Having the wheel turned all the way may also help.
If you do replace the axle, the ATF doesn't come out. You may get a little bit but there isn't any reservoir of oil in the differential.

Ok thanks. I get the pulsating noise even when I am going straight which makes me suspect the bearing. I thought on the right side the transmission fluid will come out. Any way to know if it is the bearing or the axle. I have no play when rocking the wheel.
that can be a sign of the bearing going bad. i had that same problem and after i tightend the nut back all was well for a while, the the bearing went out a few months later. test the bearing by jacking up the car and shaking the wheel up and down. it shouldn't have any play in it.
If it's the bearing, it will get gradually worse. If its a bad hub thats ruined the bearing it will feel like you have a tire or two out of balance on the highway. Personally my CV boots have been leaking grease for many many miles and I've had zero problems with them. I did have a hub go bad though.....also replaced both front bearings.
