I might be back, but I need some help!!!

I may be back in the maxima game thank god, unfortunately I need some help with this one, it's not going to be easy someone has back yard 'pimp my ride'd this car. See pics

Want's $600 CAN, the car apparently needs a clutch and won't drive because of it.....
I figure if the engine runs and the wheels are under it, it's a good price for a max.
It comes etested as well.

But as stated, I need some help with that body, spare parts guys, whatever, stock or better but I will be tempted to do appearance before the clutch (or whatever it really needs) my god is it hideous.

Worst part is I just moved and I threw out most of my maxima parts.... had spare console, 18" 6 Spokes sold with 300ZX, etc, etc, etc, etc, would've been swap for swap. Life goes on though, donations and sympathies needed if I buy it, no max's in scrap yards around here at all unfortunately, first house budget doesnt help the cause...

Happy to be back, maybe..... update to come tomorrowish

You could try negotiating with the guy... "the price is already low because it needs a clutch" so all you gotta do is say "yes but the paint is also horrible.. and its going to cost a lot to make the car normal again" and see if you get a break

You're lucky its just body panels he pained and not the whole car! although it sure does look horrible and I'd def be embarrassed to roll in it like that lol

Don't you think he'll get offended and call off the deal entirely?

It's surprisingly hard to get paint to stick, especially cheap paint on an unprepped surface. First hit it with a pressure washer. Then get some 2000, 1500, 1000, 800 and 600 wet-sand paper, and sand away the blue. Start with the 6 or 8, and as it starts to fade/peel, move up towards the 2000 and even 2500, trying not to get to far through the clearcoat. Once the blue is almost gone, start buffing with a scratch removing rubbing compound then try polishing. Fair bit of work, but might help you hold off on a full paint job.

Offer $450, tell him the same story you told us (not patronizing, just let him know the situation) and I think a way to approach the hideousness, I would be to say you want to "simplify" the look and make it a "daily driver" It's the poite way to say your not looking for the ghetto ricer feel
I also agree that a pressure washer and wetsand or buff should remove alot of the paint if it wasnt properly prepped

Cobra max

I love it is it. Can you give me his phone number ?

Just kidding! Wow, it takes all kinds of people in this World.

But, I think it is a good buy for the asking price. I would avoid hurting the guy for $100 or so. He may go "Postal" on you !

take some paint reducer and wipe that blue paint off with a rag. It'll come right off. Then you can lightly buff it to a nice shine.

Is that paint.. or magic marker? It honestly looks like the guy used a blue marker on it, how sad.

So if you buy it.. are you going to tow it back to your place under a sheet

I would stay away from it. What he has done to the outside is a pretty good indicator of the way he must have drove it.

Well got too caught up with the house today so I'm gonna try and check it out after work tomorrow.
My concern too is that the car was driven/treated as it looks, so I'm leary, but for the price...
I was gonna get the VIN, lien check it and wave $250-300 cash and say I'll take it same day (so long as there's no liens)
He has mileage listed as 200,000km, so I assume thats a very rough mileage could be anywhere around there.
Thanks for the tips on removing the paint, hopefully he didn't bake it on and the suggestions will work.

Oh, and towing it with a sheet over it is a great idea, might just do that haha I'd be embarassed just to be the tow guy.

Post back after I see the car tomorrow.

Of all the colors to do THAT with, what did the guy choose blue!? I mean I can see it being "better" if he had used black instead of blue... but WHY BLUE!?!?!

Oh well, at least its not pink and white.

Ok, checked it out today.
Biggest concern is it rolls a very slight bit, like the clutch grabs for one second and lets go.
In reverse it just howls (rev gear noise but loud!.)
TB noise apparent, if not excessive, especially in reverse.
Strange, pedal feels solid, smooth application, etc.
Wondering more likely a tranny issue....
Worse still the car has 268,000km.... (I was too right that 200k listing was... estimated...)
shifter feels like poor short throw.
Cat back has been done, cat forward is falling off though....
Car needs boost, bat/alt toast.
Front rad support HANGING, rough, rough. Guy has new front replacement though.

Also the body is showing it's age, surface rust starting around door seals, bumper, fenders, quarter panels, most is not noticable, but it's still there.
I have a hood but everything else is body work,. I hate body work and I don't have the facilites for it.

Is lowered on green springs, not tiens, guy says the ride is pretty rough., anyone know what springs it may be on? Looks like a 1.7ish drop, can't see PN's or the shocks very well.
Comes with OE struts, but they're probably worn at 268k.
HID kit hacked in, easyish unplug to stock looks like, I have headlights and harnesses from my old car still.
Paint is spray paint, should come off ok... cobra decals all over the car... ugggh.
Interior trim was painted as well, white... and covered all the control decals. my god its not pretty. But just spray paint too.
Needs 4 tires. Worse, front tires are bald... hmmm wonder why the tranny/clutch is pooched??????
Engine sounds a little rough, but hard to tell, actually just sounds like low battery/running out of fuel (it had low battery AND was running out of fuel, this may be a strong engine still).

I'm at a loss here, want the car, but knowing the work it needs, plus what it likely needs on top of that, axels, ball joints, brakes, etc, etc. It's starting to seem like money wasted when I can buy one for 2G's in decent shape....

Furthermore, these car's don't get great fuel mileage.. unfortunately and gas prices arent going down for long.
There's a MX-6 for sale that's got 170km on it for the same price.....

I hate this... I want a max back, I know this car can be nice, but I don't think it's worth the time or dough,

I already bargained him to $300 cash, and I'm pretty sure he'll take less cash in hand if I tow it away same day..

What do you guys think.. tough one..

Thanks,
Matt

Yeah I think you will end up spending a lot more on the car than you will anticipate. I think a car like that should only be used as a part car or just sent to the junk yard.

Agreed!

I'd buy it to use as a parts car for that price.. but I wouldnt try to salvage the whole car. Money pit waiting to happen.

well I think I'll hop on the MX-6, my current beater is just about down for the count and I need a car to get ready asap..
I may offer to pick the car up for the guy and give him $100, but even that is pushing it, I agree that the car will be a money pit likely, otherwise just one to patch up get mechanically good and flip it, but it would be tough to get the cash back out of it if it needs tranny work.
I'll post back my final decision, gonna call the guy tomorrow I think and make him the offer above, if he accepts he accepts, at worst I decide it's not worth it after I get into it, I can get my money back out of scrap, or close enough to it that it wont bother me.
Is a rebuilt VQ30DE worth anything these days? Or not worth rebuilding anymore due to lack of demand?

Thanks for the imput all, I'll let you know what happens

Called him and told him I'll tow it out of there and give him $100, he said he can't do it for that low.
I said that's my offer you have my number.

If I get the car Ill post back.

Thanks again for the suggestions.
