I did some searching but only found a lot of threads on speedometers being off because of tire and wheels size and the general 3% off...

Well I replaced my speedometer tonight and started my car.. Says 20pmh and Im not moving. Anyone know how to calibrate the speedometer correctly? When Im driving it works as it should, just 20mph off...

 

well for one i can say, where-ever you got it from. its been tampered with in the past.
basically the needle needs to be gently pulled out and reset down at 0 against the stopper there at stand still. "a touchy process"

 

it sits at 0 when the car is off... then when i start it , it jumps to 20mph.. So I would need to pull the needle off and put it back on lower?

 

isnt there a reset procedure on the service manual?

 

If you do the calibration procedure you can then move the needle 20 mph lower than where it is now. But you will need to remove the clear plastic cover so you can remove the needles while in the car. Plus in the cluster then follow the procedure below. Remove the needle while you are holding the button and move it 20 mph lower than where the calibration is. IE if you calibrate and it shows 60, remove it and replace it at 40.

(i) Place your key in the ignition and hold in the odometer button.
(ii) Turn the key on while holding the button in.
(iii) Release the button and wait one second.
(iv) Press the button three times. The readout should be all 888's. You can now press, hold, and release the button at your leisure and the needles will go to their default calibration setting. You have to record this so you can put the needles back on on the same place. The system will exit calibration mode when you turn the car off.
