Rpm's sound high, Auto not shifting gears

I have a 96 which has seen better days, it quickly went from a nice car I upgraded from time to time to my dd. Ive been real busy at work, so for the past 2 years it only gets regular maintenance.

It only has about 155k and recently replaced the starter for the 2nd time but on the drive to work today I noticed rpms where high, so I made sure the OD light was off then made sure I wasnt driving in 2nd. At 65mph my rpms are usually at or slightly above 2, I noticed the car was at 3 rpms and when I gave it more gas it sounded as if I was going over 80 on 2nd gear.

As soon as I took my exit I notice it didnt change gears either at slow speeds, ill be dropping it off at the stealership or Aamco tomorrow but wanted to know some probabilities, thanks.

Hey there - Have you checked codes? I know it's bad weather there, but it only takes a few minutes. That'll give you an idea if the mechanic you go to knows what they're doing. don't go to the Stealer unless you've got lots of $$$. there should be a lot of small shops around C-land, maybe check on the Upper-Midwest Forum for recommendations. Aamco might be OK, but they're only as good as the franchisee that owns it and his mechs. I've used them before, years ago in Toledo. There's a good trouble shooting guide for AT in the FSM. That'll give you an idea what's goin' on. Good luck !

If it didnt downshift then u might have lost 1st gear or somethin else happened. THe good news is, there are plenty of used transmissions out there for like 400 or 500 bucks or more depending on mileage. I had a 5spd tranny replaced on my car for 300 bucks labor from my mechanic. THe tranny itself cost 700 bucks.

U cd also jus need a new flywheel or maybe torque converter. Usually the trannys dont jus die, there are warning signals like the car SLOW to switch gears.

Sounds like your tranny was in limp home mode. As I understand it limp home will lock the tranny in second so you can drive, but will not allow shifting in an attempt to protect the tranny from catastophic failure. check all your connections around the starter where you were working and check your codes.

Ah you know come to think of it I was in limp home mode aswell yesterday after the blizzard here in NJ.

I burned rubber and spun the tires in my 205,000 mile Maxima in an attempt to get out of my snowbank. (no shovel wahhhhh)
When I finally got out I noticed my car had NO torque of the line and was just slow off the line.

Did your OD off light blink multiple times on start up ? Mine did but it acted normal again after that.
I think the trans goes into a fail safe mode when it detects a lot of wheel spin but i may be wrong there.

Hasn't acted up since and its got a lot of miles on it...

My Transmission did some weird **** like this before it gave out tripped me the hell out. 280k miles. it would slip from a light only first gear and wouldn't move untill 1500rpms then no problem. next day shifted perfect. next day late shifts like yours, next day a little ruff. next day slipped next day perfect. 1800 miles of this and finnaly it just slips goes nowhere.
