Trunk floor...

Here's an odd question.

The i30 I now drive once belonged to my mother who bought it new.

One thing I've always noticed and thought was odd is that the trunk floor is nothing but carpet and spare tire -- isn't there a rigid board that should go across the floor over the tire to create some sort of "floor?"

This car never had one, and I remember wanting to ask the dealer about it but never did, now 9 years after the fact it's kind of late.

Any ideas?

I purchased both my Maxima and I30 from the original owners, and neither came with the board. I swear I've seen it before as a dealer option, possibly as a 2 piece.

I ended up just tracing the carpet on a piece of MDF thin sheet.

That's a really strange thing to offer as an option, considering this was considered a premium brand at the time.

Base model Sentra, maybe... but Max/Inf?

This.

I did the same thing. I used a piano hinge so I can have easy access to my spare tire.

My I35 has one, but it's thin and quite flimsy. I've been thinking about making a better one out of 1/4" plywood.

What about that corrugated plastic cardboard that they make Realtor and garage sale signs out of?

An org member makes a spare tire cover to deal with the sagging. I think his username is djfrestyl or something similar.

There is a tough plastic material called "Sintra" that I have used in the past to make interior door and body panels for my offroad truck. I think this would work perfectly. Its durable, light, and looks OEM.

Here's a page telling a bit about it. Not sure what this page is all about, just something I googled:

i have a gxe and i have one, the car probably went throught atleast two other owners before me. but i think im going to buy some plywood or something stonger than what the floor board is so it wont cave in when i have stuff in the trunk

I guess it never bothered me. With a full-size spare there's really no gap and the trunk floor always seemed rather level and suitably sturdy.

Just check...my 2000 I30 has one but it's round and only covers the rim, not the entire tire.

If I remeber my 95 max had one that covered the entire tire.
