275/50/15R MT ET Radials? dangerous?
275/50/15R MT ET Radials? dangerous?
Hey guys, to all you who may be better at realistic decision making than myself,
I have been dancing around this situation for only about a week now but second opinions may help settle it for me.
SOoo, last summer I finished off a set of drag radials, only 235/55/15's I got them used for a few runs on my maxi to actually gain some proper launch. This year for racing season, I have a new set of drag radials at my disposal from my Dad's and mine project mustang, since she will not be performing this year, and only had a few runs last year, i figured I would try mounting this wheels up on the max, the unsettling thing is that they are 275!/50/15's mounted on some lightweight 15x7 inch rims.
I am only sitting this summer around maybe 13.5's and that is being quite optimistic!, I am curious as to your opinions as to how potentially damaging or just plain inefficient these tires could be on a Maxima? they do not rub and fit quite well, which got me excited, but as I pondered the idea, nothing but thoughts of axle snapping and transmission explosions entered my mind.
Thanks guys,

you don't have the power to break anything unless you do something like wheelhop or side step the clutch (which can break parts no matter what tire you're on and you shouldn't be doing either of those anyways.)
they'll look ridiculous and certainly rub if you attempt to turn too sharply, but they'll work just fine if you can put up with the rubbing and the looks. might lose some trap speed because of weight/rolling resistance, being as they are much larger than your previous tires.

Alright, that is understandable, I have methods that have worked for eliminating wheel hop, and I do plan to take the launches quite easy to see how these things grip.

They do rub at max angle only, up until about 10 degrees shy of the wheel being cranked, the wheels do not rub, which is more than enough for the track,
and yes they do look a little ridiculous and make me feel like I should be running 10s, ...

I think this is overkill, you dont need the 275 worth of traction to hook on the power your putting out.
You can dead hook small slicks, which means the worry you have for these slicks should be same worry for smaller slicks, however with your power your not going to break anything (unless its driver error)

I've done it on my 05 SER altima... Same tire, different size though.. it was a 275/40/17
The wheel's actually belonged to my friend and they are what he was running on his mustang, but they did great on my car. Hooked great.. felt kinda heavy though..

After having run them... i'd definetly try to look for something a bit thinner, but if you already have them... might as well.. lol
