Starter won't catch, but I think its key assembly

I have 98 maxima and i have a very interesting problem. when i come home i can start the car fine, but sometimes when i turn the key, it doesn't "catch" and is silent.

he took it apart and he said it looked like some of the assembly where the key goes in is run down. does anyone know what the problem might be, or where i can find resources to resolve?

Thanks

like everyone said, most likely ignition switch. get the replacement from the auto parts store and if it doesnt help just return it. just be careful not to touch the airbag wiring thats under there.

silent sound

i had the same problem w my maxima i thought it was the key or the asembely. but it was the starter. i would have to open the hood and take a screwdriver hit it, and it fired right up.
