I would just like to clean up all the plastic crap in the engine compartment, not looking for WOT increases or whistling intakes. Right now I am running with the air horn off but the filter box to the TB is still stock.

 

Hate to say it, but not really. Putting a heat sheild around the cone filter might reduce some noise.

I've also heard leaving the Helmholtz resonator in place will reduce the noise some, as well as keep a bit more midrange than just a straight up short ram or CAI-style setup. But any cold air-style intake is going to whistle regardless. And lose a little midrange.

I know that putting a velocity stack on my intake reduced the whistling sound a good bit, as well as smoothing out my powerband. But the added growl from the engine is still there with all the plastic pulled out of the engine bay.

 

Thanks SLC, guess I'll just leave it alone then. Sure looks better without all the black plastic. I've always wondered why improved air flow through a WAI caused a loss of midrange. The physics of that do not make sense to me...

LRMAF(or any other larger than OEM MAF) + SAFCII + stock airbox = exactly what you're looking for. Except don't be an asshat like me, and DO connect your PCV properly.









We all know how intakes wail, so you can't get any closer than this. Under load inside the cabin you can't tell the difference to stock. Sounds more refined.

 

I was just looking to get rid of the stock intake plumbing, it is fugly.

 

You can remove the scoop, but it will be a bit louder, not by much. It will just be a big black box, and an open hole at the front of the box.

Have you been under there at all and removed anything?

 

I don't see why you'd even be concerned with how the stock intake looks if you're not interested in increased sound or whistle from an aftermarket air intake, nothing under the hood of a Maxima is exciting or "nice" to look at IMO.

 

If you are looking to get rid of all that stuff then you will need to just deal with the consequences. As for your question the best setup I have experienced is just running with the Helmholtz connected to the MAF connected to a cone filter. This setup for me produces a minor growl that I can just hear inside the cab and nicely cleans up the engine compartment.

The only other thing I can think of that may quiet your intake down a little bit more would be the CAI through the bumper mod. But this being Fall going into Winter I wouldn't recommend it.

^^ Clean? Yes definitely and that's impressive that you keep it looking that tidy I just don't find a transverse-mounted V6 to be eye catching.
