Has anyone tryed rtv silicone on intake

Just wondering I think I need a new intake manifold gasket and instead of spending like $100 plus for one from nissan I was wondering if anyone tryed silicone? Can it be done? The stuff is strong as hell so if it can be done I will use it.

Well, since RTV silicone is used as a gasket replacement, why wouldn't it work..?

$100 plus on a intake manifold gasket? You obviously are shopping at the wrong dealer...one can be had for around $20. A tube of RTV silicone sealant is around $6. The RTV sealant will be a messy, one-time, job. The intake gaskets can be reused.

Wait, are you talking about the lower intake manifold gaskets or upper? The lower are a little more expensive at about $30 a piece. Dave Burnette at South Point Nissan can get you a discount though.

I really wouldn't recommend the RTV on the lower intake. You don't want to end up getting any residual RTV selant into the valves.

$100 is the price of the whole job from the dealer.

I did the same job about 15 months ago with the dealer intake gaskets,It was the lower intake and it lasted til now.So I was wondering if rtv would be a better hold.Foodmanry you say the intake gaskets can be reused? Maybe I will try resealing using the old ones with atv.Yes I know it should have lasted longer.Thank you guys.

And I am not 100% sure the intake is leaking but I am getting a cel with PO420 with a brand new bank 2 pre cat and I can not find an exhaust leak.

Lower intake gaskets really should last the life of the car unless you damaged them during the installation process or did not torque the bolts properly.

I hardly think you have an intake leak at that part. It could be a leak upstream from the lower intake manifold, but I doubt it.

You may have a problem with the pre-cat you installed. Which one did you go with? Did you do a search? As I have perused different threads in here it seems there are some aftermarket pre-cats which do have leaking issues.

Yeah, it's the stuff you're supposed to use with a spacers install, so I'd assume it'd work fine... The only problem is that you have to scrape it off (not really all that easy) and re-apply it if you ever remove your IM again.
