Odd noise coming from engine...WTF?

So about a week ago, I noticed that my car is rattling between gear shifts. Its a manual btw. When I shift from one gear to the next, there is this rattle that sounds like a ten speed boke when you pedal backwards. You know that ticking noise from the chain? It sounds like that, but faster and lasts for just a few seconds, but it happens between every gear! Its really bad on a cold start, but happens even after the car is warmed up. It also happens when I let off the gass and Im in gear. Its really annoying and it sounds bad. I dont know if its the flywheel or something with the transmission. Is my clutch going bad? Is it just a bad belt? I have no clue what it could be, but it seems to be tied into the major components of the car; the engine and transmission. Anyone have any similar problems? There has been no loss of power and I am sitting at 133K. I just wanted to get a general idea of what it might be before calling the stealership.

thanks in advance!

And yes, searching has been used. I didnt want to throw in the precat idea yet. It only rattles when the clutch is engaged for shifting, not under acceleration. The other times it happenes are when the engine is spooling down when I let off the gas, but this happenes about 95% of the time, not 100% audible.

Is the sound more pronounced outside the car ? Lets say you were in first gear ....drove to like 3000 rpm then let off the gas and had the car go back down would you hear it then ?

Heat sheild maybe ? I have the rattling sound too and I had my neighbor work the throttle a few times while I was under there and that was it......

Im not sure. It doesnt happen at idle. Ive tried to roll down the window while driving to hear it as I pass a building or something for the sound to bounce off of, but I cant hear anything. Im sure you could hear it with the hood up, but the sound is coming from the front/engine area. The difference from the problem I have found on the forum with the precat and the heat shield is the fact that this happens when I depress the clutch to switch gears. It doesnt happen when I accelerate; only during gear shifts and when I let off the gas and the engine "sppols down".

Sounds like a throw out bearing/pressure plate issue in your clutch.

I concur! When my bearing went out, it would screech when in neutral and clutch disengaged. This would also occur when shifting gears. Annoyingly loud especially at a stop light and/or drive thru.

Thank you both!! I will look into that as the issue. I just didnt want to leave it with my mechanic (who is hard of hearing - years of shop noise) and tell him to listen for it! lol.
