help with very ROUGH startup in morning
hi guys,
My girlfriends Mom's Maxima (98 GXE, auto) has been acting crazy occasionally. It seems that on some mornings (lately more and more) when she starts up the car the RPM's are at 2300, and then they slowly decrease to the appropriate 750-800 range. The car screams in the morning cause the engine is racing. Now this has also happened in the summer, so I dont think it would be due to the cold weather.
The fact that it does not do it every day, mystifies me.
She took it to the dealer and they kept it for 2 days and found nothing wrong with it. They did not really go into doing a MAJOR diagnosis. They would have charged her over $1000 in labor. My maxima in the morning starts at like 1300. So I know that 2300 is CRAZY.
If any one can give some advice, help, or anything I would appreciate it.
thanks to all in advance.

Craig, thanks for the reply, but you misunderstood.
My question regarded a 98 maxima GXE automatic. That is the one with the starting problem.
The 95 maxima I mentioned is mine (and was used as an example).
feel free to try again

Sorry bro I read alot of posts and I tend to get lazy with the details
Just take that bird into Nissan. They will give you a free inspection. Keep in mind the '98 starters are not bulletproof, it still could be that.

Starters have nothing to do with how fast your car idles. They only turn or crank the engine to get it started. A weak starter will have a tough time starting your car. ie slow cranking speed.
Your high idle could be caused by a few things.
1) The throttle cable hanging up on something - check that first, you should have a little play.
2) Sticking idle control valve
3) Dirty thorttle body, which could lead to problem #2.
4) As Danial B. Martin called it "FALSE AIR" Check for leaks around the throttle body. False Air usually causes a high idle even at normal operating temperatures. False Air is air that leaks into your intake manifold after the throttle body.
I think I'd start by checking the throttle cable and doing a throttle body cleaning. Take the throttle body off to do a really good job. It's pretty straight forward, should take you about an hour.
