What is the proper way to remove and install gauge needles?

I picked up a 96 SE White cluster today and instead of rolling back the mileage i wanted take the white face and replace my black ones

I looked at some older threads but no one really stated the right way to remove the needle without damaging it.

I highly advise against this. Everybody i know that has done this always screws it up. I had someone who "said" they had pulled needles on multiple cluster's...we'll he ****ed my temp gauge up, and I had to buy another cluster

I have been searching on here for this a while ago and stumbled upon a very old thread but was able to do it for the tach successfully. Not sure about the speedometer. But what you have to do for the tach, is remove it from the cluster, remove the little plastic that keeps the needle down past zero. Once that is removed, you let the needle fall freely until it stops. Where it stops, you mark it lower down in the face itself and then once its marked, turn the needle counter-clockwise it a slow upward movement and the needle will come out. Transfer the mark on your new face and then reinstall the needle with a slow downward movement still going counter clockwise. When its all the way down, turn the needle counter-clockwise until it free falls back to the mark that you made. Once it does, replace all previous parts and it should be working.
