6 speed transmission makes a clunking noise when letting off the gas

All of a sudden driving home today my car started making a clunking/clacking noise coming from the driver side. At first I thought one of the tires went flat, I pulled over and checked the tire. It was good.

Then I figured it must be something in the transmission or an axle.

So when I am on the gas, the transmission does not make any noise. When I let off the gas, it makes the clunking noise.

When I got home, I jacked the car up and checked to see if the axle had torn a boot or something. That was good, so I put the car in neutral and spun the wheel/tire. About one turn and the transmission would make the noise. I grabbed the wheel/tire and spun it pretty hard and the transmission went clack clack clack clack.

The car drives fine, atleast up to 4th gear works fine. Didn't get any higher in the gears in my neighborhood.

I'm guessing it could be something in the diff. Or maybe it's low on fluid.
Any ideas?
I really appreciate it.

posted this in here also because the 5.5 has the same transmission

If that is your car in your sig and you ran a 12.9 then I am pretty sure it is your diff. Have you checked your tranny fluid? And dammit from reading your sig that makes me wanna dump my exhaust and go to a 3"!

Yeah, that's my car in my sig. Why does running 12.9 mean its my diff though?
Have you experienced something like this?

A 3" single exhaust is the way to go. Makes power and saves weight.
